That's a huge increase if it's true, and it's only January 12th (actually, maybe not that huge since Scotland isn't included in this graph). Excess UK England and Wales winter deaths: www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=574

Aren't Socialist Gov't's supposed to prevent this sort of thing? Sounds like they aren't doing a very good job.

Sounds like they aren't doing a very good job. Depends on the intent.

Well, I can see why Europeans are smitten with Obama. The first comment on this story was: ".....President Obama has odered all public places, libraries, schools etc to remain open and hot soup and cocoa to be made available for the elderly, homeless and those without jobs."
Where do they get these ideas? Obama doesn't have any authority over most libraries and schools, and instead of handing out hot soup and cocoa to the elderly, he wants to cut their Medicare.
It seems the UK has substantially raised their prices on most everything, including food and energy, but have increased pensions very little. Some now must choose between food and heat.

If there is a plan, it is obviously the plan how to exterminate "useless" people by "nice" help of mother nature. If there is no plan, it could be even worse. Exterminate all who can't survive consequences of AGW. We all know that AGW produce a lot of cold winters, at least in last decade. If we compare civil casualties from WWII to severe winter, than we don't need any war. AGW is enough.

With AGW as an energy policy failure is certain. The question is will Gore, Obama, Brown, Phil Jones, Briffa, Mann, Lisa Jackson, Pelosi, Rudd.... be held accountable for the deaths caused by their adherence to a failed religion based on non science.

Most Socialist governments would like to eliminate their Seniors. We old buzzards are not well enough indoctrinated to shut up and die naturally - so the State can inherit their wealth.

we're a curious lot if we just accept some Govt. stats and fight tooth and nail over others?
How do you reckon suicide is here in the U.K.? do you look at the govt. stats and shrug or do you think " what kind of a country wants to publicise a high suicide rate?"
If you want you're death to be accepted as 'suicide' then you'd better write to a solicitor with both your intent and methods otherwise you'll be another 'Accidental Death'.
If you die of hypothermia in the U.K. (as many old folk do EACH YEAR) then you'll have died of heart failure or kidney failure or whatever else that domino fall instigated by losing body temp leads you to. It doesn't do to be a country who kills it's old folk over winter now does it?
If you are interested about the death rate due to cold then dig deeper into the official stats for all the 'sudden deaths' that involve know causes of hypothermic death.
Thatcher may have forestalled the 'pension crises' but she didn't kill it off. Be it Swine flu /cold/starvation or loss of hope they'll weed you oldies out in the end mark my words.
Bah! Humbug.

Ratty, it's less where but when. At various times I have been over most of the Earth south of the 55th parallel and north of the Equator. Excepting Tibet, China, Mongolia, and the present North Korea. And some odd islands.
And yes, some of my Aussie friends are Socialists. And some have realized other peoples money is finite and come to their senses.

Greywolf, I am much less likely to die of disease than of overwork. Caused by taking care of the young.
