>> We have known for 40 years that coronal holes are the sources >> of high-speed solar wind. L&P has little to do with this. What about these 50 km/s outflows, are these significant discoveries? I don't see much interest in coronal holes at this SC24 website, nobody seems to be very interested tracking them or observing their effect on band conditions. So my question was if you think more interest will be generated for coronal holes, if interest in sunspots 'fade' along with their contrast numbers? Coronal holes bring strong solar wind, but band conditions are influenced by solar ultraviolet that directly creates the ionosphere. In coronal holes UV is low.

Is there a discussion somewhere of the difference between the ISES and the Hathaway prediction? Looks like the prediction line from ISES is way high compared to observations, but Hathaway's is looking quite close. Charts are in www.solarcycle24.com/flares.htm

I was on the ISES [NOAA/NASA/SWPC] panel.

I'm sorry to tell what I think but, ionosphere is both disturbed by "electrons" UV carry away but much more by "protons" that must be ejected with solar wind from coronal holes. That because ionosphere contains much more "ions" or "protons" than electrons (its name comes from that evidence). I think"electrons" are in UV rather than "protons" which opposite are in solar wind from coronal holes. It's just what I think after several years of observations and minding

The ACE Solar Wind gadget on the front SC24 page has shot up to 600km/s and I see a magnetic storm building up on the Fairbanks and Pt Barrow magnetometers (starting about 0500Z this morning) geomag.usgs.gov/realtime/Also I am hearing some European DX (PU5) coming in on 10 meters, which has been pretty dead for weeks. I'd like to believe this is the result of CH422, but that might be anecdotal speculation at this point.

PU5 is Brazil , south america on 10m this time of year is common and has to due with TEP propagation.

Right. For some reason I thought it was Portugal. :-|

There are two new Magnetic Signatures in the Southern Hemisphere at the same Longitude as 1109. They' re puny right now 0345 UTC Saturday but they warrant keeping an eye on.
GONG showed that area as a Hit one day early last week and then quit on it.

Good rate of growth towards the end of the movie in the middle sections of the group.. at first the middle spots were being sucked into the 2 main spots.. and then more middle spots are forming again.

The group forming ahead of 1109 looks solid. I' d say it's a good bet they will be assigned a number.
