Dr. Svalgaard- Just watched that wonderful SDO youtube movie the current CME's. Is what I am seeing correct or known, namely it looks to me like a region of white polarity (positive?) got isolated from the large positive regions and instead was "stuck" in a region of negative polarity and that small region was responsible for much of the activity. Is that just wrong or it is sensible? It might make sense as a small area of one polarity near a big one of another might make magnetic field lines interaction more common... The Sun is a messy place. When polarities abut they can interact. It must be remembered that the action is NOT in the photosphere where we measure the magnetic field. The flare happens far above the surface in the corona.

The last string (Solar Cycle Main Discussion IX) got, very roughly, 10,000 views a month. This string has nearly 10,000 views in less than ten days.

Very exciting though! I have been awaiting the sun to come alive since january 2008 when NASA predicted this cycle to be one to watch!! (biting nails) so awesome what we are so obliviously unacustommed too in this generation and era that may change our way of life to a preindustrial style of living (possibly)

I will post my own remarks this evening.

The far side is rather barren, as noted by bradk. But there is a new region about to rotate into view, whose coronal loops in 171A EUV suggest some lively magnetism. Attachments:

The aurora is still pretty darn small...hoping for more later as we have pretty clear skies.

So for us newbies.... would the first sign of the arrival of a CME be an increase in Kp, or is there something else we should be looking at? Kp looks very quiet at the moment.

Hot and dry trend Since January. Looks to continue at least through the first half of May.

www.swpc.noaa.gov/ace/MAG_SWEPAM_6h.htmlThat helps. Note the jump in speed, temp, and density. Likely signaling the arrival of the CME. The field is strongly north so I don't think this leading edge will trigger much

The CME has just hit. As predicted it started out with northward field
