It is more likely that the magnetic cycle continued but the field was not strong enough to form visible spots. Do you expect that we'd see solar flares and CMEs emanating from invisible spot regions during the cycle maxima of a 'Maunder Minimum'-like reoccurrence? If so, would you expect an overall lower intensity?

If so, would you expect an overall lower intensity? Yes I do, but it is hard to put numbers on it. I do not expect lower intensity as the explosions are governed by local conditions. The number of geomagnetic storms [caused by solar explosions] follow the sunspot cycles, but their intensity [lower panel] does not seem to do that:

Observation with coronado pst double stack SM 40mm Ha today under medium seeing. The sun has many active region in action but with low activity. At the solar center there is the most powerfull solar area this time with three active regions in a closed area. We have one growing region at Northwest and a large filament at west brokin in three - four pieces. The higher prominence today at the south. www.solar-007.eu/site/

The southern hemisphere has largely died out, even on the backside. Only a couple hotspots...
