As an aside, isn't the risk of a major EMP event lower this cycle because of the magnetism drop per spot found by Livingston and Penn and yourself? If magnetism drives this thing we shouldn't be in a better place now because of L&P and better yet if we are entering a minima, right? It should perhaps be lower, but not necessarily. In www.leif.org/research/Cycle%2024%20Smallest%20100%20years.pdf we note: [para 10] "Average space weather might be milder with decreased solar activity, but the extreme events that dominate technological effects are not expected to disappear. In fact, they may become more common. Two of the eight strongest storms in the last 150 years occurred during solar cycle 14 (Rmax = 64) [Cliver and Svalgaard, 2004], while three of the five largest 30 MeV solar energetic proton events since 1859 [McCracken et al., 2001] occurred during cycle 13 (Rmax = 88)." Oh great, give me something else to keep me up at night

We have as much of a plan to deal with this scenario as we have to get out of Iraq.

Ya, but the plan is NEVER get out of Iraq.......of course.....if Ron Paul were elected, which should happen, we would be out very quickly. Another reason to vote for him. Then maybe we could work on the serious needs.....such as fortifying the grid.

This is a complex problem. Let's talk about the global scope. The third world will be relatively unaffected. They'll see a drop in tourism and imports from developed nations. It'll affect our comms, GPS, the encryption keys generated via the clocks on the satellites - and that's assuming a magnetospheric contraction during this event that drops the magnetopause standoff distance even before we start seeing a ground effect. Look at organizations such as the UN, they take forever to do ANYTHING. There are so many public/private entities here that even organizing the international conferences must be a hassle to to organize in themselves - I can't imagine any standardized approach to tackling this problem to be more successful than the BS that the Generals in the field have been complaining about for all of these years (probably more of a hindrance I suspect). Then again, I saw a warning about this problem on FOX so now I'm going to have to question if indeed there is a Sun in the sky that emits flares.. Does anyone have any idea what the Norwegians or Icelanders are doing? OECD report: www.oecd.org/dataoecd/57/25/46891645.pdf

Hi everybody. I´m a 24 yrs old male from Chile who arrived here while searching for more information about solar flares, in light of recent events. Anyways, I read about the petition, signed it, and I´m also doing my best to spread the word about it in sites like facebook and such. I also translated the petition [hope you don´t mind] and gave it a more "local" scope, mostly Chile which as you may know, has seen a rise, however minimal it can be, in terms of social conscience. In case anyone wants to sign, spread the word to his/her spanish-speaking acquaintances, it is here: www.ipetitions.com/petition/solarchile/Thanks to everyone for at least taking the time to read this post and let´s hope nothing bad happens, at least short-medium term wise.

Some aspects may border on fringing national security, but suffice to say the last two years, certain improvements have been made to long line runs, to dampen erratic sine wave injection (induction) in them. These normally cause the transformer oils to overheat and subsequent the windings to fail. Secondly, arraignments have been made to coordinate a controlled shutdown of sections of the national grids under a high potential period or event. This will mitgate damage to the grid, but will leave people without electrical service. My advice, buy a generator and some gas, this is an odd cycle.
