Most NZ gas and oil has coal as its origin. As a result our oils are waxy and gas rich. In general this is not the case as marine shales are the source. But the abiotic story is weak clearly if you cook the hell out of carbonates etc in a subduction environment you may yield some gas. Its a little the same as talking about biogenic gas there are significant fields in the world in NZ some Italy and Russia also but without the conventional oil and gas industry they would not have been found or utilized. A coal fired world alone would be possible but a lot poorer and apparently we will discover how much poorer soon. We American Deplorables are not subscribing ... and they can't make us.

In Central Eastern Oklahoma, what's left of the Appalachian structure trails off gradually from east to west, and lots of carboniferous fossils in the ancient layers of sandstone, and many shallow coal deposits just near the surface. I don't know how deep these sediments were buried 75 million years ago. The stone that was above has weathered off and left the numerous harder mountainous ridges in the area. The layers of sandstone and shale are laid thousands of feet deep. The oil and gas in the region are over 2 miles deep.

2 mile is about where you would start to see the oil window it depends on thermal gradient etc.
but 75 million year's could mean a lot has been stripped of the top also.
Just had a look through my telescope here and Jupiter and Saturn are on top of each other Saturn touching the radius of the moons of Jupiter.
some say we may need more of these fossil fuels if that means anything?? Fingers crossed!!

Britain has voluntarily returned to a Victorian prosperity level. Christmas may have been canceled, but that looks like something from "A Christmas Carol".

Britain has voluntarily returned to a Victorian prosperity level. Christmas may have been canceled, but that looks like something from "A Christmas Carol". You don't know the best of it. That radiant gas fire will soon be banned by the 'Net Zero' crowd unless they work out a way to run hydrogen through the old pipes. Each house is expected to spend ~£10,000 on insulation and converting all heating to electric only adding a smart meter (so your appliances can be shut down remotely). The heating bills are expected to increase by a significant percentage possibly 25% or more. Politicians pushing the UK equivalent of the Green New Deal don't care about that little old lady they have virtue signalling to do. Meanwhile in China they are commissioning a new coal fired power station every 2 weeks or so (subject to Ratty letting them have coal) they will not have the same 'net zero'/'Green New Deal' restrictions. China expects the rest of the world to have been deindustrialized by 2030 - only 9 years away. It would be really good if Australia were to fund its mines to carry on mining coal. But ban its export to China. The weather is going to be bad this winter and worse next winter in China. Their industry would collapse and workers going home to cold homes would become difficult to control. Make that last to December 2021 and China will be a lot less belligerent.

Uranus, more of a challenge, had been just east of Saturn lately.

summer is not an easy time for viewing, shorter nights and a lot of land heat to impact the atmosphere but even at the 10deg above the horizon the rings are visible on my old and manual Celestron C8.
