Seems appropriate to start this thread with all the cold being forecast. See Musings from the Chiefio more harbingers of a cold winter to add to Joe Bastardi's

BTW It was snowing in the Australian Alps with some enthusiasm yesterday.
This followed closely on a 30 degC day!!
The wind changed - it is still rather cold in the Antarctic.

Hoping Mr White's forecast comes out sooner rather than later. I thought he was on target to have it out by late September. Evidently not the case..

I predict North America won't have as many "cold snaps" as the 2013 winter. I also predict that Europe is in for a doozy of a winter. Going to make that solar in Germany have to work really hard, and those windmills in Britain will need a 30 knot steady wind with no gusts nor calm periods.

Last winter in central Europe...well, I don't know i I can call it winter because temperatures were spring-like and there was no snow even in the mountains. Not sure what to expect from this one because temperatures are still very warm.

Here in Michigan, the Great Lakes form a 'buffer zone' across Superior and particularly Lake Michigan; it could plainly be seen on satellite maps, almost like a dome around the state. Green Bay, Wisconsin can be -10F and directly to the east 20 degrees warmer. In recent decades, lake levels were low and temperatures generally warmer, however, last year it was a cold winter; quite brutal in January, and people celebrating July 4 on ice flows on Superior. Now there are two players in the game that may possibly plunge my state into a deeper freeze this winter. wattsupwiththat.com/2014/09/09/all-great-lakes-at-or-above-normal-for-first-time-in-14-years/wattsupwiththat.com/2014/10/14/water-temperature-of-the-great-lakes-is-over-6-degrees-colder-than-normal/ There may not be a lot of snow, depending on the jet stream which where I live seems to be right on the dividing line, but right now based on what I've observed the last 40 years, it is going to be at minimum, very cold. Edit: last year about this time, I had dinner (and watch the Detroit Lions lose) with a far left Progressive friend of mine since I was 5 years old. He is of the Joe Romm/Daily Kos strain if you know what I mean. The topic of global warming yada yada yada came up, and of course the Great Lakes was at the top of the list of his "proof" of AGW. I'll have to send him the links from WUWT, but he'll probably just say Anthony works for Fox News and the Koch brothers. Ideology always trumps rational thinking with Progressives, but he is still my friend.

we currently have snow falling in two hemispheres. I thought the "warming" was supposed to be "global".

Looks like N Atlantic Drift [aka Gulf Stream] has pretty well shut down.
Note also cold across a large part of the N Hemisphere oceans, and Great Lakes.
All it needs is Bardurbunga to explode .............
and AGW and a substantial part of the human race face an awful winter. It might also mean a truly dramatic increase in Arctic Ice.

we currently have snow falling in two hemispheres. I thought the "warming" was supposed to be "global". It is global, that is the new ' warm snow' TM that occurs because global warming makes the atmosphere warmer so it can carry more water, therefore more snow.... Get with the program ( no logic pre-requisite).

Michigander here as well, I read that article yesterday and first thought the lake effect machine will probably be shut down early this year. For Michigan, I've never seen such great conditions last winter at the slopes in the NW lower peninsula (crystal, Boyne etc). I will be a little bummed if the LES sputters out too soon. It really helps adding to season end totals even on the eastern side where I am. Although, is it possible we may see more "sunny" days? There may be less lake enhanced cloud cover to deal with? Maybe not have a 2 week stretch without seeing the sun

I trust the farmers almanac and persimmon seed centers over NOAA.
