www.metcheck.com/UK/dust_charts.aspThe UK is about to receive a dusting of....well, dust, from Sahara i believe, which is not that unusual, but im sure it is at this time of year. This really indicates how our airmass, and that of europe generally is sourced from the tropics rather then the pole at the moment. How much of this can we attribute to the El Nono i dont know, but with parts of the world further north getting very cold weather, the main reason we are not cold is the strength of the influx of warm air from the south. Does this mean the world is warming?? or will the tide turn?? i've still got the winter of '46/47 in the back of my mind, it could still change, plenty of winter left!!!

(OK, believe that and I have 1,000's of CWT of spuds to sell ya at $20.00CWT. A bargain according to the computer models)

At least it is warm, even if it is snowy. Warm is a relative term!

It's been crazy warm here in SE Texas. Currently 75 degrees at 6:40 PM on the shortest day of the year. Forecast is for 80 Degrees on Christmas. All time record is 82 in 1964. I have tomatoes growing on my plant in my garden. We experienced some crazy warm temps in the 1990's but this takes the cake.
With that being said I think it all falls in the realm of "weather" and I am not willing to jump on the "AGW" bandwagon just yet.

UK climate sees The Nice Boxing Day Flood as hundreds are left with out energy
The Great Boxing Day Flood: Five inches of rain causes chaos across the North, thousands are left without power, a 20ft sinkhole shuts the M62… and now even the PUBS are getting washed away!
Now this is getting serious!!!!

The Great Boxing Day Flood: Five inches of rain causes chaos across the North, thousands are left without power, a 20ft sinkhole shuts the M62… and now even the PUBS are getting washed away! Now this is getting serious!!!! OMG. Oh the humanity ....The horror.....The horror!!!!! Much like cold predominated in winter '08-'12, a reoccuring wet j came after this. Our own local river burst it's banks 12/13 and 13/14, 13/14 Somerset was badly flooded. ..now Cumbria etc. What is interesting is how consistently the jetstream pushes system after system into roughly the same part of the uk over several weeks, literally overloading the drainage system. I'm 'only' 2/300 miles from this affected area, some days we've had no rain and they've had a months worth, several times! I understand that a strong jetstream is driven by temperature difference? We're clearly mild in N Europe right now, I noticed daffodil pushing up at my parents place over x mas! But I guess it must be cold further north... Meanwhile the 10 day+ forecast continues to push the idea that it will get cold, I've seen it predict 4" of snow for some days, something I never saw last year....however as time progresses the jetstream keeps dominating. One of the reasons I suspect the Pacific ssta are pushing the natural balance a bit, adding a bit of extra energy to our atlantic systems and keeping the arctic systems at bay. I'd be very interested to follow up on Sig thought a few posts back about unusual looking pressure system setups over Greenland....

There is a lot of talk of a sudden stratospheric warming forming possibly triggered by the extreme Rossby waves and the meridonal jet running North over the Himalayas. The meridonality being driven by the warm Eastern Pacific. So a drop to cold in January is not unlikely.
