It snowed last night
8:00 am: I made a snowman. 8:10 - A feminist passed by and asked me why I didn't make a snow woman. 8:15 - So, I made a snow woman. 8:17 - My feminist neighbor complained about the snow woman's voluptuous chest saying it objectified snow women everywhere. 8:20 - The gay couple living nearby threw a hissy fit and moaned it could have been two snow men instead. 8:22 - The transgender man..women...person asked why I didn't just make one snow person with detachable parts. 8:25 - The vegans at the end of the lane complained about the carrot nose, as veggies are food and not to decorate snow figures with. 8:28 - I was being called a racist because the snow couple is white. 8:31 - The middle eastern gent across the road demanded the snow woman be covered up . 8:40 - The Police arrived saying someone had been offended. 8:42 - The feminist neighbor complained again that the broomstick of the snow woman needed to be removed because it depicted women in a domestic role. 8:43 - The council equality officer arrived and threatened me with eviction. 8:45 - TV news crew from CBC showed up. I was asked if I know the difference between snowmen and snow-women? I replied "Snowballs" and am now called a sexist. 9:00 - I was on the News as a suspected terrorist, racist, homophobe sensibility offender, bent on stirring up trouble during difficult weather. 9:10 - I was asked if I have any accomplices. My children were taken by social services. 9:29 - Far left protesters offended by everything marched down the street demanding for me to be arrested. By noon it all melted
Moral: There is no moral to this story. It is what we have become.

Naut, did you spot the MH370 story on that site? Yes, a pretty good summary of what is surmised to have happened. Three aspects that make it more interesting. 1. The reason the INMARSAT tracking was so good was that the 'geostationary' satellite that MH370 was logged into was not so geostationary. A minor insertion issue means that the satellite is actually in a perpetual figure of 8 orbit to and from the correct position. This means that transmissions have dopper shift corrections that are more forecastable and extreme than other satellites in the constellation. The maths for doppler correction is daunting but allowed the INMARSAT crew to work out the likely flight of the aircraft and things like is it turning or descending. It was relatively rapidly identified that the aircraft must have been airborne and the 'Receive Ready' handshake dopplier corrections gave an idea to the velocity of the aircraft. 2. A review of 777 front crew's systems understanding showed that none of them were aware that once the aircraft was powered on, the SATCOM link would auto-connect at the lower layers of the connection protocols and then maintain a continual link with RR messages and after a time out repeat a connection protocol. Not only that but the signals would allow rough tracking of the aircraft. This also meant that on the engines stopping due lack of fuel the automated Auxiliary Power Unit and/or the Ram Air Turbine would restart the electrics and trigger another log on attempt from the SATCOM avoinics. So the out of time re-connection request after >6 hours is a good indication of the point at which the engines died and the backup electrical systems switched on. 3. Trials of a 777 simulator with engines powered off, showed that the aircraft would start a relatively gentle phugoid (word of the month). That is the aircraft would increase in speed and rate of descent until the speed meant more lift when the aircraft would come out of its dive and perhaps even climb then as it slowed back down it would nose down and repeat the process. This would be likely to result in a gentle sea surface entry. Therefore, indications of a continual rapid descent would appear to show someone sentient at the controls _or_ a flight management conputer that was programmed for a steep descent - possibly to a level 500ft below the surface at the time expected for fuel starvation. I think it is the former - the pilot was at the controls and did the same as the German Wings pilot, and flew the aircraft into the surface at speed. Eventually, something will be found. One of the points of contention 'in the trade' is why aren't Flight Data Recorders uplinking their information continually with the bandwidths now available (cue beancounters). Added to that is the potential continual streaming of video of the cockpit - crews have hissy fits at that idea as they are sitting for hours talking about all sorts of things including how poor their management is - and they don't want said management poring over the tapes. Could lead to an interview without tea and bikkies. I think that eventually, like attendants in 7/11s and for that matter controllers, pilots will be continually recorded on open mics and with video - and that will be streamed to an independent group such as EASA or the NTSB; to be held in escrow should an accident occur.
