As normal they are missing a step and missing some validation. WHY would the vortices at the poles become extremely weak? Note that the vortices are way up above the jet streams at 10hPa also note that the vortices are NOT WEAK AND Note that the Jet streams are not weak either but they are Meridional (lots of Rossby waves) these waves form when fast moving air flows past slower moving air and would not be there if the Hadley cells were vigorous. This means that although some places are warmer than normal on a pole bound branch of the jet stream some are colder than normal The way the Earth heat engine works is that the equator is the input for the engine and the poles are the output So everything is driven by the Hadley cells the Hadley cells cannot be driven by the poles the entire reason for the jet streams is the Coriolis force and geostrophic effects of winds at the top of the convective cells moving polewards accelerating the winds in the direction of the Earth's rotation and 'trapping' them below the troposphere Why would the convective Hadley cells become weaker? It cannot be CO2 and 'downwelling' infrared. It can only be the lower input from the Sun. Is the sun weak at the moment - yes it is. I suspect, if there is data recorded for it, that the height of the tropopause at the equator is lower than normal too showing that the convective Hadley cells are less vigorous along the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone. There is data in the SIGWX WAFS charts but it is not laid out for comparison over the years - something to look at later. The current convective tops seem to be around FL550 which is around twenty thousand feet lower than it can be. (Not sure whether those are 'echo tops' what radar sees as the cloud tops or visually reported cloud tops which are 5000ft or so higher).

They need something to keep the paradigm flying for those that don't pay much attention. Kind of like covid. So look for nasty CO2 driven blizzards in our future. I will note that so far for January, Azores surface pressure has not been this low since 1987. Conversely, Iceland surface pressure has not been this high since (wait for it) 1987. One hell of a negative NAO right now. Gibraltar is the lowest since the the 2009-11. ACID? As for England ... Record Cold Spell of 1987: How It All Started Introduction It is well accepted that the most severe spell of weather in southern England since the 'Little Ice Age' occurred in the unlikely year of 1987 in an otherwise 'average' winter. www.theweatheroutlook.com/twoother/twocontent.aspx?type=libgen&id=1503

Under his Bio - Description
Cambridge science PhD. Karl Popper fan. Climate change sceptic. Amateur astronomer. Retired from Academia, so I can now tell the truth, even if it upsets.
Don't know his academic specialty area AND trying not to be too judgemental, but ... Is that highlighted statement something to be proud of? Would seem to be a large part of the problem.

Chatted to him a bit. He spent some time in Antarctica and while there changed to a white hat but couldn't wear it. If you have been in academia you may not realize that it is a little less friendly than being in ISIS Any sign of apostacy and the wrath of god can be released on you (been there done that).

If you have been in academia you may not realize that it is a little less friendly than being in ISIS Any sign of apostacy and the wrath of god can be released on you (been there done that). Was teaching at U of Florida from 93 to 96. The internet was just coming on hard and there was minimal social-justice extremes in Geography and Urban Planning Depts. at that time. Spent 97 to 02 in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain with a 1-yr stint at Georgia Southern in between. NO social justice stuff in the Magic Kingdom or Bahrain. Just dealing with the long arm of the religious police instructing me on keeping my woman covered ("my woman" did not like abayas ), and the periodic Shia outbursts against the Sunni rulers toward the end. The Philipino home brewers kept the expats happy with the products of their illicit trade (majorly supplemented their meager salories). From 02 to 10, the USGS in Flagstaff was a very laid back place. Only the usual internal bickering ... but mostly a lot of scientists with their own little projects and annual funding dustups. So I missed the real decline into madness. Having said that AND having not been personally under the gun of the new morality police of the last decade, I can say ... it's easy to talk. But it remains true that a large part of the problem is that the middle-of-the-roaders have not stood up to the fanatics ... and either join the gravy train or retreat to their quiet office dens and shut their mouths. Thus the infection has become an interconnected set of pustules that will require major surgery to fix. Or the patient will die.

If they had to pay for their mistakes, they would be a lot quieter.
