It is not so much CO2 as a complete lack of understanding of history and geography. One of the problems is that a lot of the more 'easy read' history has been 'adjusted' to fit the meme the Holywood version of history. The early settlers were themselves farming so there was no huge reafforestation when they arrived nor do cattle ranchers tend to like forestation of the land.

It seems that the reasoning (cough) is - temperatures went down that MUST be due to less CO2; what happened just before that we can claim caused a drop in atmospheric CO2? How could that cause the CO2 to drop? Now make the figures fit with a few carefully parameterized models. PhDs all round!!
