A very rare July cool front pushed through SE Texas last night and Houston has a good chance of breaking the record low of 68F on Wednesday. Something that has not happened in the summer months for a long, long time. It is extremely rare to set record lows in the summer in Houston due to the urban heat island effect. Years ago our official weather recording station at Intercontinental Airport on the north east side of Houston was in the Piney Woods with very little development. Today, due to Houston's growth the airport is surrounded by miles and miles of concrete and buildings.
Concrete, cement and asphalt that absorbs heat from the high Texas sun during the day and is much slower to give up that heat up at night.

Meanwhile, Brisbane stays on track for an above average July, likely to be proclaimed the hottest ever.

Well, today in UK i can almost hear the gasps of delighted horror as temperatures quickly rise at airports and the prospect of record temps at UHI that have expanded hugely in the last 50 years All due to a warm pulse of air bought north on an upward limb of solar related meridionality.
