And my prediction is (** tada**) a tad over 14.75 million sq kms. (I think we'll see further strong growth this year, with possibly a later maximum extent than normal)

Kiwi: Do you have any idea what the ice extent was in 1979 and 1980?

Kiwi: Do you have any idea what the ice extent was in 1979 and 1980? As you wish (Westley, from Princess Bride) I've included the likely daily maximum extent, as the above series is monthly averages. Attachments:

My prediction is the maximum ice extent will ---------- fluctuate.
Where do I go to collect my prize?

My prediction is the maximum ice extent will ---------- fluctuate. Where do I go to collect my prize? The boot of my car, right next to the dildos and blow-up dolls.

Is JAXA working again?

Yes, JAXA is working again. We have been having some pretty wild oscillations between growing really fast to hardly growing at all lately, though that could be issues with the reflectivity of the ice.

I just re-read Polar Passion I believe it was called. During the winter, open water produces so much fog, even narrow openings in the ice make it difficult to see. I can imagine the sensors have a hard time with that.
What I found amazing again, is that even at -30, there is quit a bit of open water as the ice drifts and falls apart then reforms. Constant flux.

Hudson Bay is now fully froze over.
Feels like it too.

As soon as Jaxa start up their data for 2010, I'll put up my charts for 2010.

My vote is for 14.6 on 3/10.
Does anyone know what influences the ice extent in the Okhotsk Sea?

A number of "scientists" have models which predict the area of Arctic sea ice at times in the future; e.g Wang et al GRL. One wonders if these people would be prepared to run their models, and "predict" the area of Arctic sea ice at maximum and minimum in March and September 2010 respectively. WUWT had a similar set of predictions for September 2009. I wonder how one could go about requesting this sort of thing.
