There has been a glacier flood, so there is definitely something hot coming into contact with it, magma is on the move as there have been harmonic tremors. Well I'm pleased it waited until my two big submissions for studies ;D We still don't know if all this is caused by large hydrothermal activity or an eruption. We'll have to wait and see

A very small eruption has occurred, but we won't know for a while wether this is a prequel to something bigger.

Still small harmonic tremors occurring around Katla so the small eruption at the weekend (if it was an eruption) has not stopped the activity.
Iceland is very active at the moment as there are even suggestions that Hekla might also be gearing up for some action as well.
Well it's a waiting game.

Katla still looks very active, from someone living at a safe distance.

www.jonfr.com/volcano/As Jon Friman says, seems to be lots going on. I think we should make a book on when Katla will explode. My bet is late August, when we will be swanning around incommunicado in the Kimberleys in blissful ignorance. Fortunately our air travel is unlikely to be affected.

The glacier over Katla is beginning to melt very fast.
Looks like something is going to blow, but as the last big eruption was in 1918 it is not well documented as what the run up tothe eruption was like.
The melting of the glacier is bigger than that caused by any of the minor eruptions since 1918.

I don't understand the logic of saying we'll not see another ash cloud like that in our lifetimes.
I'm actually speechless.
