trbixler: I have to agree with the observations on CFL's. I switched several years ago to them. The lifespan posted verses real world is about 1/2. In fact, the bulbs seem to last approx 1.4 years in my environment.
If you live down south, they may make sense. Up north, they make little sense I see now. The lack of heating during the winter, (the predominant time of useage of light bulbs), the lack of continued "brightness"......etc....etc.
It appears from all factors considered that CFL's are a poor choice. They are not environmentally friendly, the longevity does not correspond to claims made, they do not provide needed heat.....etc.....etc.
A dumb move by me.....and a dumb move by government it turns out.

sig I went with LEDs and so far am pretty happy. Although I do not get any heat but then again I do not waste much in running them. I currently heat a piece of my house with radiant floor heating. Warm Boards with the water circulated by a Grundfos pump, the water heated by a Takagi gas boiler. The heat is very efficient.

Mr. Green protests. Did no want to panic the multitude of Volt owners without further tests. "NHTSA: White House had no role in Volt fire disclosures" "The White House had no role in the decision to delay disclosure of a firethat broke out ina crash-tested Chevrolet Volt, the Obama administration told Congress on Friday. National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator David Strickland said the White House had been informed in September of the June fire, but didn't ask the agency to keep the information secret. NHTSA briefed Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Strickland told three House Republicans in letters released Friday. TheTransportation Department "shortly thereafter informed the Executive Office of the Presidentregarding the June fire and NHTSA's test plans to determine if the fire indicated that there is arisk of post-crash fires in Chevrolet Volts. No one from theExecutive Office ofthe President requested orin any way suggested that NHTSA delaypublic release of information related to the Volt fire," said thefour-page letter dated Thursday. NHTSA didn't publicly disclose the fire took place until November, when Bloomberg News first reported it had occurred. It opened a formal defect investigation later that month when a second Volt battery pack caught fire seven days following another government test." www.detroitnews.com/article/20120113/AUTO01/201130405/1361/update/NHTSA-White-House-had-no-role-Volt-fire-disclosures

Mr. Green's efficiency for all to see. "Congressman irked by Solyndra bonuses, equipment destruction" "The head of a House Energy and Commerce Committee subcommittee investigating the collapse of solar panel maker Solyndra said Friday that tapes showing company workers destroying inventory were “an outrage.” “First we learn of the ridiculous request for $500,000 in Solyndra bonuses. Now we find out that these employees are apparently destroying millions of dollars worth of equipment,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns, Florida Republican and chairman of the committee’s investigations panel" www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jan/20/stearns-destruction-solyndra-equipment-bonus-plan/

Contrasts "Geothermal test will pour water into volcano to make power" "Geothermal energy developers plan to pump 24 million gallons of water into the side of a dormant volcano in central Oregon this summer to demonstrate technology they hope will give a boost to a green energy sector that has yet to live up to its promise." www.usatoday.com/money/industries/energy/story/2012-01-22/geothermal-power/52702158/1with "Ubehebe (YOU-bee-HEE-bee) is the largest of a dozen such craters, or maars, clustered over about 3 square kilometers of Death Valley National Park. The violent mixing of magma and water, resulting in a so-called phreatomagmatic explosion, blew a hole in the overlying sedimentary rock, sending out superheated steam, volcanic ash and deadly gases such as sulfur dioxide. Study coauthor Brent Goehring, (now at Purdue University) says this would have created an atom-bomb-like mushroom cloud that collapsed on itself in a donut shape, then rushed outward along the ground at some 200 miles an hour, while rocks hailed down. Any creature within two miles or more would be fatally thrown, suffocated, burned and bombarded, though not necessarily in that order. “It would be fun to witness—but I’d want to be 10 miles away,” said Goehring of the explosion." wattsupwiththat.com/2012/01/24/death-valleys-big-bang-theory/

Mr. Green and his motorcade. "President Obama leaves event promoting clean energy in a motorcade of 22 fossil-fueled vehicles" "On January 26, 2012, President Obama visited a Las Vegas UPS plant. Stimulus subsidy for said UPS plant to purchase natural-gas-powered trucks: 5.6 million dollars. Stimulus subsidy for North Las Vegas green energy plant that laid off 200 workers yesterday: 5.9 million dollars. Using taxpayer dollars to leave an event promoting clean-energy vehicles in a motorcade of twenty-two fossil-fueled vehicles: Priceless." nevadajournal.com/2012/01/26/president-obama-leaves-event-promoting-clean-energy-motorcade-22-fossil-fueled-vehicles/

Mr. Green and his government work. What a difference a year makes 365 little days. The vision. "Electric-Car Firm That Received Biden Visit and $118M in Stimulus Funds Files for Bankruptcy" "CNSNews.com) - Ener1--a company that manufactures batteries for electric cars, and that received $118.5 million in federal stimulus money, and that Vice President Joe Biden visited last year the day after President Obama’s State of the Union Address—announced today that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. In last year’s State of the Union Address, delivered Jan. 25, 2011, President Obama set a national goal of having a million electric vehicles on the road in the United States by 2015—a goal that would be achieved, Obama said, by taking money out of the oil industry and “investing” it in new technology." cnsnews.com/news/article/electric-car-firm-received-biden-visit-and-118m-stimulus-funds-files-bankruptcy

It will be interesting to see how this works out for California. Buildim in China shipim to Ca. make power in four corners. www.srpnet.com/about/stations/fourcorners.aspxNIMBY "California adopts “clean car” rules California adopts ‘clean car’ rules" "California air regulators passed sweeping emission standards Friday that will require one in seven of the new cars sold in the state in 2025 be an electric or other zero-emission vehicle. trbixler: Mandates always worry me in that it takes the economics out of the equation.
When, and if, elec cars actually save consumers money, they will be widely adopted. I can easily understand why the car co's are for this. No mattter the cost, the cars will get sold....'
Not a solid economic theory is it?
