Thank you, icefisher. Ratty, I refered to the WUWT article for that reason. As far as I can see, It doesn´t explain it. Nevertheless, I have found another very interesting article (in Spanish) with a superb graphic on the theme. There are other graphs on the page, all showing the gradual (?) decline in the North.

And one of them shows Nimbus 1964 data: and the article adds: "the data also suggests Nimbus I mean extent of Arctic sea ice in the 60s quite similar to that of 70 and 80."
