The UK Winter of 2014 has been a mild one; over the last coupe of weeks I've been out with the chainsaw and axe cutting and splitting into logs the recent storm felled trees. On several occasions it's been mild enough for the shirt to come off (I'm even sporting a Winter tan - sorry for rubbing it in Sig)!!! Here's the data (courtesy the Met O and Paul Homewood) to put the UK's Winter into a historical context. Although, at 6.1C, the UK Winter of 2014 was 1.6C higher than the 1981-2010 average, this winter only ranks as 13th warmest since records started in 1659. The winter of 1869 remains the warmest, when the mean temperature was 6.8C. Meanwhile, this winter was not even as warm as that of 1734. Homing in on the last hundred years or so, we find that the winter of 1988/89 is still the warmest since 1910. The colder run of years in the 1960’s, and again in the 1980’s, stands out, but the 10-Year average is now pretty much where it was in the early years of the 20thC. Ya could get a tan here if you wanted to spend hours in the sun. And I can firmly state, those hours would HAVE to be indoors. No way to survive topless in -10F with wind long enough to tan.
Glad that at least your temps were around normal.

It's officially "weird" here in South Texas. For the fourth or fifth time this year we have had ice/snow/sleet. This morning I woke up to "thunder sleet" and my early morning flight has been canceled due to freezing rain. It was a rare weather treat for me to wake up to thunder and lightning mixed with sleet. Strange day indeed...

Global Weirding, Glenn. Explains a lot. I don't think the long range climate models have an algorithmic function that factors "weirdness". But I have read that the Little Ice Age was a period marked by much "weirdness" in the weather.

At this point I hope the pattern changes and we get back on the warm side of this loopy jet stream. Its time for Europe to get some some of this cold and snowy weather. I've had enough and am ready for warm tropical breezes!

I was hoping for a mild but long EL NIÑO just thinking in your needs but I might change my mind and call for a strong and long lasting LA NIÑA

Going through WUWT´S Reference Pages I´ve found this Surface Temp Anomaly Chart for Feb 14 and really find it incredible that the whole Artic Region is showing positive anomalies of +20ºC !!! -Could it be some type of error?

Karlox, The arctic has been warm as the SSW and the moving polar vortex have sucked in air from the south (as those in Finland have been telling us repeatedly) see this DMI graph from today: However, that is not good news, the temperatures are still well below zero and at this time of year that heat is on the way out. As Sig said its like leaving the door open in North Dakota. The recent satellite figures actually show the tropics cooler that is also bad news so not only is the door open the furnace is turned down. As Harold would say - don't sell your coat.

I think it was about time that us Europeans finally got a break as well while you got a taste of what we had for several winters in a row. This is the first break we have had in years from the cold, so I think we deserved a mild winter for a change. And here in Norway it has not just been the winters either.. We have not had a real summer in years either with maximum temperatures just a few days near 25c with it peaking already in may here in middle of Norway. Meanwhile back in 90s and first half of this millenia the peaks were normally around 30c with summers that had at least a week or two of good weather. It has not even been swimable in lakes or fjords for near a decade now since temperatures no longer go anywhere near or above 20c in water due to lack of extended summer weather. Next year it is probably us who get the cold again..
