Hey Florida -It's About That Time Again Watch Out For Falling Iguanas. These are strange reptiles. Almost dog like, and sometimes almost affectionate. The males tend to become too aggressive usually and their owners eventually get freaked out by them.

I prefer watching geckos eat flies over morning coffee in the tropics. Doesn't look quite so bad at the surface. Perhaps it's the less scary colors.

And now for the 2009 to 2019 head to head comparison. Coming soon. Any indication that the upcoming cold outbreak is an early direct response?

"A “Siberian Express” weather disturbance currently crossing the Arctic Ocean will meet up with the semi-permanent winter “polar vortex” over Canada, pushing a record-breaking cold air mass into the Upper Plains and Midwest U.S. by Wednesday.
Chicago All-Time Record Low?
Both the European (ECMWF) and U.S. (GFS) weather forecast models are in agreement that by Wednesday morning temperatures in the Chicago suburbs will be approaching -30 deg. F. The all-time official record low for the Chicago metro area was -27 deg. F (O’Hare) on January 20, 1985, and that 34 year old record could fall as the ECMWF model is forecasting -32 deg. F for Thursday morning while the GFS model is bottoming out at -26 deg. F on Wednesday morning. Of course, these forecasts will change somewhat in the coming days as the cold wave approaches."www.drroyspencer.com/2019/01/dangerous-record-breaking-cold-to-invade-midwest-chicago/That merits an 'exceptional' badge - I suspect that there will be many deaths from cold.

That is moving toward exceptional Sig you may need a jacket. Had to pick up my daughter from the airport last night. Forecast was for a bit of a blow, and yes that did happen. Took approx 3 hrs to drive 75 miles, the last 5 miles took 45 minutes. Pickup up a young lady who had run in the ditch. I spent the night at my daughters, so did the young lady. At times, being "seasoned" has its perks. Such as knowing how to drive in white out conditions without leaving the road. Yep, I took out my Pendelton jacket. I would have taken out my Peacoat if it hadn't shrunk over the years. Dangest thing, is on a hanger in the Atic and it keeps getting smaller! The hype over this little cool snap is well overblown. At least to someone who is "seasoned".

Current long forecast for my parts show a 10 degree spread in the the Tuesday low from Kirksville (-8F) to Columbia (2 F) ... a distance of 90 miles. Me thinks that might change as it's hard to judge where the hard driving freight train may stop. Us non-Vikings have always wondered how you guys made it Sig. Multi-Purpose Post

Reporting seems to indicate as much ... but we know better than to put too much faith in the media when they latch onto a money maker.

Its all in the wool, and the ability to fish and use a well tuned bow. That is how we made it.
I remember many years ago. That newfangled material was suppose to be better than wool for warmth. I had switched, cool hands, cool feet, cool head etc.
WELL, my wonderful Mama had gone up north to the hinterlands. She found a pair of Icelandic Wool socks, which she presented at Christmas. They were WONDERFUL! I have since returned to the clothing of my youth. Wool socks, wool mitts, wool cap, wool shirts. It really is amazing, IF you can keep your hands/feet/head warm, the rest of your body just doesn't get cold. The wool shirt helps as well. The weave is tight, it doesn't get cold when wet etc.
Do I need to tell ya that I am back in love with woolen weaved garments??
They work!

And may I suggest Merino wool in particular. It's soft against skin, a great temperature regulator (hot or cold) and washes well.

And now for the 2009 to 2019 head to head comparison. Coming soon. Any indication that the upcoming cold outbreak is an early direct response? Would it make sense that the remaining strat vortex above canada appears to be generating low pressure at trop. Bulk of downwell is dripping into the bering sea causing high pressure. Zonality disrupted, low pressure retrogrades towards/under high.....path is over US.

We are rated for extremes of that magnitude ... but its been a while. Recent - Feb 2011 -10F twice Jan 2014 -11F twice Jan 2018 -9F once
