How here is something you don’t see every day! Antarctic Warming, Antarctic CoolingOr: “Please ignore all politically incorrect thermometers in the Antarctic; our computer simulations are much better.” Obviously the only broken thermometers are the ones which record cooling. Unfortunately this NCAR story which references an earlier research paper which has been discussed at length was not dated but appears to be the most current post on the NCAR Home Page. Mike Indeed, if you'll look into the "weights" they applied to the thermometers...some are negative (Literally...thermometers that showed cooling were made to project warming) and chunked it up into regions that would accentuate warming. It's just as bad as the nonsensical study showing the medieval warm period and little ice age never happened...using the same techniques...and it's from the same guy.

Dec. 21, 2006: Evidence is mounting: the next solar cycle is going to be a big one. Solar cycle 24, due to peak in 2010 or 2011 "looks like its going to be one of the most intense cycles since record-keeping began almost 400 years ago," says solar physicist David Hathaway of the Marshall Space Flight Center. science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/21dec_cycle24.htm

Anyone have an archived copy of this news report about the Sun influencing the climate: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpuKRIuhJD8Apparently the youtube user deleted the original video. It was a classic. Does anyone have it?

Solar Cycle 25? This may be old news, but (as the natives say) I've gone missing for a while. Just in case, see: Archibald, David. “ NASA now saying that a Dalton Minimum repeat is possible.” Blog. NYT has a nice hat tip to Dr. S, but without credit by name.

As Hathaway said in the NY Times, there were several months in 2009 with virtually no activity. Correct. The only activity during a 60+ day stretch was a few Tiny Tims. For all intents and purposes, we have had 2 (two) 60+ day virtually sunspotless runs. I am willing to bet we'll have another 60+ day run as a distinct possibility, marred only by Technical Tim.
In my area of No. Rural California, we set about a dozen minimum highs (Aug 6,2009) from a low that came off the Eastern Pacific. I would expect that out of an Arctic Low. If this is GW, I need a heavier sweater. The Sun should not feel like November in August.

Here in Southern Indiana we just broke all the records for July. No 90-degree days at all. I think at least some of this may be related to the lowering of the top of the atmosphere. current.com/items/89644124_space-is-closer-than-we-thought.htm. If so, it implies a solar connection. The problem is, many of the AGW proponents NEED to know that man is at the center of the universe. Admitting that the sun has warmed and now is cooling the climate, and that it's not our fault and there's nothing we can do about it, is tantamount to believing in God. Oh my! What if people stop believing in activists and start PRAYING for better weather!!! ALL HAIL AL GORE! ALL HAIL AL GORE!

CNBC the Financial News Network just had one of the anchors talking to a floor trader about electricity prices dropping. The floor trader went into a 3 or 4 minute speech about how cooler temps are the reason electricity prices have been dropping, and that the underlying cause is global cooling due to solar minimum. He went on to recommend that given all the money thrown around for c02 studying, a couple of sattelites to study this solar science stuff seems like a smart investment. The anchor guy agreed and commented that the two of them must be flat earth deniers.
Overall CNBC is on board with cap and trade, univers. health care, etc, so this came as a big surprise to me.

The reason Canadian ice is melting is that they WANT it to. There are also places where the ice is getting thicker. Ice melting shouldn't surprise anyone. We ARE in a tremendous Global Warming phase ... not the one activists are touting but the one that started 12,000 years ago when the Holocene began. What we're dealing with today are short-term ups and downs that come and go. In the 1980's we had a warming session, which is when science jumped into politics. Now we're back into cooling again, but unfortunately many have developed a ve$ted intere$t in this whole "fear of global warming" thing. Ask GE (who owns all of the US carbon certificates and primed to sell tons of green tech) if they are ready to turn off global warming fears! Ask Third World countries who are chomping at the bit for US dollars to start flowing once we join the Cap & Trade Club! Psychologically speaking, there have always been those who have a real NEED to believe that man is at the center of the universe, and therefore man has caused global warming and only man can fix it. This is nothing new. What's happened now is that powerful investors have jumped on the bandwagon hoping to hitch a ride to a huge mountain of money. Fear can be a VERY powerful market force. Check out this article from 2004. www.commondreams.org/headlines04/1209-08.htm . Marcela Valente is a journalist with Inter Press Service "Journalism for Global Change". Global PAYDAY is more what I'm thinking.

NSIDC on arctic ice: It is now unlikely that 2009 will see a record low extent 18 08 2009
From NSIDC sea ice news
During the first half of August, Arctic ice extent declined more slowly than during the same period in 2007 and 2008. The slower decline is primarily due to a recent atmospheric circulation pattern, which transported ice toward the Siberian coast and discouraged export of ice out of the Arctic Ocean. It is now unlikely that 2009 will see a record low extent, but the minimum summer ice extent will still be much lower than the 1979 to 2000 average.
