Interesting. So plants, where water transpiration is proportionate to CO2 concentration, respond to the higher water loss necessitated by higher CO2 levels by reducing the number of stomata. Resulting in lower water loss. This prejudices their thermoregulation and to cope with a need to dump heat when stomata reduce, plants migrate to lower temperature zones. That would be expected - but is not happening in all cases.
Looks like several boxes restricting sight in the scientists!

This article may have relevance to Ag questions, and is worth a look: "Plants have unexpected response to climate change" news.sciencemag.org/climate/2014/08/plants-have-unexpected-response-climate-change"Not all species flee rising temperatures. As the mercury has inched upward across western North America over the last 40 years, many plant species have moved downhill, toward—not away from—warmer climates, according to the results of a new study. The finding adds to growing evidence that temperature isn’t the only factor influencing how Earth’s life will respond to climate change." My suggestion - the plants know what is coming, and follow Astromet!

Just so we don't get too complacent with apparent Arctic recovery and the failure of the Northwest Passage to open, the Independent publishes this: "Melting glaciers are caused by man-made global warming, study shows" www.independent.co.uk/environment/melting-glaciers-are-caused-by-manmade-global-warming-study-shows-9669572.htmlThe article includes this glacial hockeystickness: "The study found that about 25 per cent of the global loss of glacier ice that occurred between 1851 and 2010 could be attributable to human influences, but that this rose to about 69 per cent between 1991 and 2010, based on computer simulations of the climate that included natural and man-made effects." Wonderful science at work here.....

Reading through the sailors' recent blog entries and announcements, what seeps through is naivety. I wouldn't want to put my life in their hands.

The Guardian has really become an obsessed paper. Do they even bother printing positive news anymore? It all confirms my view that the Guardian (and the Independent) are providing a drip-drip-drip of bad news climate stories with sound bite headlines.

California's current drought is not as bad as previous droughts. What has changed is the diversion of water from ag to cities. And a large supply of water that normally went to AG in the Central Valley now goes to keep some little fish alive. If memory serves me, 300,000 acre feet of water has been diverted. California is a large vegg growing area, but it isn't the only vegg growing area. Thanks Sig, I did suspect that historical normal events are being labelled as something else. Now THAT has never happened before! Would I be right in guessing that investment in infrastructure for water treatment/distribution has not kept pace with industrial and domestic, let alone agricultural, need?
