Interesting Met Office page here: www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate-service-uk"Climate Service UK creates framework that provides the support and advice for public and private sectors to manage climate-related risks and opportunities Throughout history society has faced risks arising from natural variations in climate. Today, we face additional challenges from human-induced climate change. However, with our expanding knowledge of climate science, ever-improving climate forecasts, and growing understanding of how climate hazards impact society and the environment, we are now able to be more strategic in our response to climate-related risks and opportunities. The need for information and tools to enable both the UK and wider world to cope is real and urgent. Climate Service UK addresses this need by offering expert advice, bespoke climate information, value-added services and solutions to help build capacity in developing countries." The Daily Mail does have a wide ranging and interesting science section. In my scanning through today, I found this article: "Earth is being protected by a 'Star Trek-style invisible shield': Scientists probe mysterious barrier blocking 'killer electrons'" www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2850566/Earth-protected-Star-Trek-style-invisible-shield-Scientists-probe-mysterious-barrier-blocking-killer-electrons.htmlThis is about current research on the Van Allen belt. However, the article contains these interesting statements: "An invisible shield, some 7,200 miles (11,600 km) above Earth, has been found blocking 'killer electrons' from bombarding our planet. These electrons can whip around the planet at near-light speed and have been known to threaten astronauts, fry satellites and damage space systems. If they hit Earth on a large scale, they could knock out power grids, radically change the planet's climate and drive up rates of cancer." Radically change the planet's climate. Well, well, well. At the end of the article, "'If the sun really blasts the Earth's magnetosphere with a coronal mass ejection (CME), I suspect it will breach the shield for a period of time.'" So... a CME hitting the Earth (and there are lots although seldom dead centre on us) would breach the shield and cause a climate change. Well, well, well.

One thing that concerns me is the re-definition of terms. "Climate Change Denier" is defined to mean "AGW denier" (stone the blasphemers) rather than someone who does not accept changes in the climate, or who accepts changes in the climate for reasons other than so-called AGW.
Hijacking and redefinition to suit political and campaigning purposes can be found elswhere. For example the often hurled epithet "racist" seldom describes a real racist per dictionary definition. Although that is well off topic on this board, it is another striking example of redefinition to suit a purpose.

"Shropshire firm helps in Ebola battle A medical supplies company in Shropshire has found itself on the front line in the fight against Ebola – preparing to work 24 hours a day to keep up with demand." www.shropshirestar.com/shropshire-business/2014/10/10/shropshire-firm-helps-in-ebola-battle/I'm not sure if this hit the national media, but I heard about the story and tracked down this local paper item. Worrying sentence, "SP Services has had meetings with the UK Government and sold to Africans who have flown into the UK for a single day to buy the simple hand gels to help combat the spread of the disease." So, the Africans - where from, how many, were they screened? The company are obviously well placed to do a good job, but their visitors concern me!

And here is a missing factor: "Jellyfish Are the Dark Energy of the Oceans" "The fluid dynamics of swimming jellyfish have provided a plausible mechanism for a once-wild notion: that marine animals, hidden from sight and ignored by geophysicists, may stir Earth’s oceans with as much force as its wind and tides. Called induced fluid drift, it involves the tendency of liquid to “stick” to a body as it moves through water — and a little bit of drift could add up quickly on a global scale." www.wired.com/2009/07/jellyfish/

Sea Ice MetricThe Metric for this year's poll has dropped lower over the past few weeks. The 4.0 barrier is certainly under threat I've sent the girls home and turned off the supercomputer!!!
