In Spain we´ve had August mean temperatures rating fith hottest since 1971, third hottest for XXI century (Source from Agencia Estatal de Meteorologia-Meteo State Office). September has been well above average as well, final Sep met data remains to be issued and shall confirm, my guess... But right now I feel we are on the verge of a dramatic swapping for the end of the month, here in Spain leading to heavy rains and extreme met phenomena... ( that´s my guess just looking at mid-term forecast) Currently 81F, partially cloudy, humidity round´25%... nice afternoon for a walk downtown Madrid...

Ah the benefits of living in California! Well I suppose it makes up for living in one of the most tectonically active regions of the world Some little shaking from time to time isn´t that bad... I can tell for in 1974 during my American Scholarship High Shool Year, one of those little ´ shakings´ brought to an abrupt end my most enjoyable ´siesta´ during American History Class... it was very funny, teacher and mates laughing... At last it smells automn for the first time here in Madrid... cooler, cloudy, some rain-showers... nice!

Stands ups Take Actions regarding our Growth Model, natural resourcess mis-or- overexploitation, increasing gap between the top richiest and the poor, Finantial madness global dictatorship, atomic threat being some atomic countries involved the ones in cronic explosive unrest such as Israel and Pakistan... I believe we do have to take an effort, which means perhaps a little bit less confort and money, to push-forward new cleaner energy technologies, yes, I think we should and it is urgent we do it, but I don´t buy the estrategy of trying To redirect and mend our global economic system using the AGW hypothesis. Current people starving, women being degraded in large parts of the world... that´s something worth of Stands Ups Take Actions... but not anything due to "a ´possible´ increase of up to X degrees in the next Y years" weheas X and Y keeps on changing and being updated whenever confronted with reali ty. We should for sure ask our public and private scientific institutions to spend time and effort trying to understand more on weather and climate and how may it affect our close and mid future. We are getting better and better technology and resourcess and we are knowing and learning quickly -compare last 30 years with any other prevous period of mankind history- but no hurry for AGW stands-ups which is nothing but a bate...

Well it looks like Autumn, feels like Autumn, smells like Autumn...it is Autumn ;D Thread name change ;D Except for most of Spain where it looks feel and smells like pure mid hot summertime, with a late heat wave and little or none thunderstorm or rainfall. I´ve just read a local press release on an experimental farm where they grow up 33 different types of nearby local traditional varieties of tomato plants; well the guy in charge said that this year -so far- all varieties were being very late due to a colder and rainier winter and springtime... I´d suppose that now this heat wave that is about to end in 24-48 hours would´ve been speeding up the proccess and our tomatoes are catching up with the season...Mostly Highs and hotter than expected air masses have been prevailing here for weeks with a few scattered thunderstorm episodes (couple of days). Wish the automn comes soon

Quote "Does irrigation using 'fossil water' ALTER the hydrologic cycle?" unquote What matters is -case by case- possible overexploitation of available resources -such as fossil water- and its impact in surrounding human population in short-medium trends. As for the question itself addressed to Socold, I would like -hope you both don´t mind- to take a guess and say YES but within the confines and perspective of the overall Hydro Cycle it may not have a high quantitative impact, but for sure does for our human society being one of the most concerning problems regarding fresh water trade and handling.

Awfully hot for late August here in Spain, heat-wave warning for a 2-3 days starting now mainly in central and southern part of Iberian Peninsula (highs form 38-39 in Madrid to over 40C southernly. Azores HIGH is currently Azores Low and deepening... Somehow both Highs and Lows seem to ´stick´and wander around same areas... same last year and it ended up in well above average rainfalls in Mediterranean area for Sep-Oct and a very very rainy winter-Spring in Southern Spain... interesting...

quote Although there are arguments that not all increases in vehicle weight benefit safety, these arguments do not contradict the general finding that, all other things being equal, more mass is protective.
"The heaviest vehicles in each class (cars, SWs, and pickups) have about half as many fatalities per registered vehicle as the lightest vehicles." See Figure 4-7, page 71 ] Hope they didn´t spend much time or money for these "surprising" findings... In Spain what we would consider as a fairly medium large vehicle would be something like a Wolswagen Golf (former ´Rabbit´in the USA), and the fact is that during the past 6 years, despite a large increase in running vehicles our casualties rate by car accident have fortunately dropped dramatically. Reason? Much more radar and police controls and a new legislation bonus-malus type where one can loose its driving license for months or years after accumulating certain types of driving offences. In short: Big Brother watches you for your own sake; it´s a pity, but that´s how we´ve made it.

1- ("natural") climate oscillations are a proven fact. I think YES. Aren´t they? 2- Mankind -human race current society- capability to affect global drivers affecting Mankind itself (not to mention planet Earth) accoding to its current own growth patterns has been proved. ie: Ozone layer hole, CFC´s etc- take it as an only example as appropriate for this forum, though the list is very very loooong: fishering over-exploitation, rainforest retrieval, oil productions mainly on corrupted-sites, leaving for instance BP "affair" in the Gulf as the peak of the iceberg (check what´s been going on in Nigeria - Niger River-delta, for example). -Well, the planet itself seems to be rather stressed? or is it just "we", human beeings, and our "unconvenient" growth-always-growth model?-
And sure, chaos have a role to play... and it SHALL for sure, more than expected, due to our brand-new "EMBODIMENT OF VULNERABILITY", brand-new for Human Race and History... we´ve just put ourselves in a position that will likeky bring forth a radical crisis... Spark will be here or there... but the dry field is ready to be set on fire... PS: It´s just a feeling... but I wouldn´t keep on increasing C02 levels so "happily" (which doesn´t mean I am in favour of a CO2 expeculative market, or the politics involved... That´s same crap coming from same Model) 3- We (all) know much less than we think we know... lot to learn ahead! Arent´we playing around too happily with very serious matters? We simply DO NOT KNOW... we should be at least a little more "prudent" and skeptical either side of petrol industry interest and politicians making profit of scaring temperature rises predictions... while REALITY of Mankind -modern society better- doesn´t leads to optimism anyhow

Shall I have to define my standing I would love to say I feel like being a very weak believer... in so many personal ways... so I feel just the same regarding ´true skeptics´: I am a very weak believer in true skeptics either... There is so much to learn! Let´s enjoy that part and revitalize this forum at the same time Carlos

Beg your pardon for this interference, both steve and hunterson... Perhaps we should add ´true´ to generics term ´deniers´ in order to establish ea ´ponderate scientifc debate and sound calibration before comparison´... So the questíon would be: Is ´true believer´worse than ´true denier´? My pos: you can name it whatever, put it names and labels, next load it with prejudism, fear... though that´s not chip, then you can go right away to skip a real intelligent debate and let´s plunge together into propaganda abyss world... and enjoy it? (mostly boring) Beg your pardon Carlos
