Here's a new article on popsci.com, What's Happening to the Sun?"According to Woods, even a smaller solar cycle could induce some cooling on Earth. "Not enough to offset the greenhouse gas global warming effect," he said, "but enough to potentially slow it down for a few years." The solar cycle's effect on global temperatures is only about 1/10 of a degree, whereas the greenhouse effect over the past 30 years has been about a full one degree change, Woods said." www.popsci.com/military-aviation-amp-space/article/2009-01/whats-happening-sun

The "super-greenhouse effect" courtesy of Science Daily.com "..the finding also suggests that a rapid influx of carbon dioxide some 90 million years ago was the likely cause of a super-greenhouse effect that created extraordinary polar heat." and: "We found this turtle right on top of the last flood basalts—a large stretch of lava from a series of giant volcanic eruptions," says Tarduno. "That leads us to believe that the warming may have been caused by volcanoes pumping tremendous amounts of carbon dioxide into the Earth's atmosphere. There's evidence that this volcanic activity happened all around the planet—not just the Arctic. If it all happened on a short enough timescale, it could cause a super-greenhouse effect." He notes that current changes in the recent Arctic climate have affected his field studies. "It is difficult to separate short-term climate trends from a longer-term pattern, but our last few field seasons in the High Arctic have been extraordinarily warm," says Tarduno. "Sometimes students exchange parkas for short-sleeve shirts." www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/02/090201094125.htm

The Weather Channel yesterday claimed that this year's cold weather is indeed a result global warming:
Global warming is pushing cold air South into the U. S. and Great Britain but overall the world is warmer. The global warming trend is firmly in place.

The Weather Channel yesterday claimed that this year's cold weather is indeed a result global warming: Global warming is pushing cold air South into the U. S. and Great Britain but overall the world is warmer. The global warming trend is firmly in place. I'm working on a story for talkingabouttheweather.com about North Dakota's winter so far. Many counties there have had more than 400% of normal snowfall this year. I'm partial to the expression I first read on this site "to go outside and shovel global warming," as more people, in more places, have had to do during the last two years than at any time in at least a decade. Weather, I know... The Weather Channel itself is interesting, in terms of where it's located. If it had been set up in Minneapolis rather than Atlanta (which it easily could have been), I'm unconvinced that the staff would be as willing to promote the hysteria as it has been. Sure, some presenters go into "the field" for reporting, but by and large it's an institution that does not have to deal with snow and cold much. New York City, where Real Climate is based, was just out of the clutches of winter's worst during the past two years. I do not anticipate that the Big Apple will be spared during the next few winters. At some point, some place, somebody who's been serving Kool-Aid is going to have to step outdoors and think to himself, "Hmmmm.... it's kind of cold out here!" One of my favorite anonymous quotes comes to mind: "Time heals all wounds and wounds all heels."

Some areas will get much less snow when it is colder simply due to the Great Lakes being frozen over. The ice cover over the water limits the amount of heat and moisture released from the lakes. The heat is maintained in the lakes, so the atmosphere should be colder, but the atmosphere is drier so any heat already in it should escape to space more readily making it much colder, which keeps the lakes frozen, and the heat in the biosphere.
Is that a negative feedback or a positive feedback?

World faces 'irreversible' climate change, researchers warn
(CNN) -- The world is facing an increasing risk of "irreversible" climate shifts because worst-case scenarios warned of two years ago are being realized, an international panel of scientists has warned. Temperatures, sea levels, acid levels in oceans and ice sheets were already moving "beyond the patterns of natural variability within which our society and economy have developed and thrived," scientists said in a report released Thursday. The findings came at the end of a three-day conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, where nearly 2,000 researchers gathered to discuss climate change. The group called on policy-makers to use all tools available to reduce dangerous emissions of greenhouse gases. www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe/03/12/irreversible.climate/index.htmlDoes anyone know anything about the 2,000 researchers attending this conference? The way this story is written, it sounds as if all 2,000 researchers agree with this announcement.

Hulme, Mike and Pielke, Jr., Roger(ed). What was the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference really about?, March 13th, 2009. sciencepolicy.colorado.edu/prometheus/what-was-the-copenhagen-climate-change-conference-really-about-5055"What intrigued me most, however, was the final conference statement issued yesterday, a statement drafted by the conference’s Scientific Writing Team. " Sound familiar?"This was not a process initiated and conducted by the world’s governments, there was no systematic synthesis, assessment and review of research findings as in the IPCC, and there was certainly no collective process for the 2,500 researchers gathered in Copenhagen to consider drafts of the six key messages or to offer their own suggestions for what politicians may need to hear." "This conference was organized by the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU), a little-heard-of coalition launched in January 2006 consisting of ten of the world’s self-proclaimed elite universities, including of course the University of Copenhagen." "IARU is not accountable to anyone and has no professional membership. "
