Ouch Well its meant to be spring here n still freezing 12 c today cold and wet, flood warnings everywhere - and this is Sydney. A few years ago we were told our main dam (Warragamba) would be dry in a couple of years and were heading up to 70% capacity with other dams almost 90% capacity. www.iliveinsydney.com/water/damstats.phpAnd that doesnt account for the current deluge. Many places here been 2-8c below average and floods; IDN28500 Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology NSW Priority NSW SEVERE WEATHER WARNING Flash Flooding, Damaging winds. For people in the Hunter, Mid North Coast and Sydney Metropolitan area Issued at 11:05 am on Saturday 6 September 2008 Synoptic Situation: 9:00 am EST Saturday An almost stationary low over the sea close to Port Stephens is expected to move slowly away to the east/northeast later in the day. Gale force southerly winds with mean speeds of 65 km/h and gusts in excess of 90 km/h are expected along the Hunter coast for much of Saturday. Gale force winds are also possible for coastal Sydney today, and gale force southwesterly winds are expected to develop in southern coastal parts of the Mid North Coast during the afternoon. Wind gusts over 90 km/h have been recorded this morning at Norah Head on the Central Coast, Nobby's Head at Newcastle and Wattamolla Beach in the Southern Metropolitan. Moderate to heavy rain may leading to localised flooding in the Hunter district today, and further rain is expected for Sydney where a Road Weather Alert is current. Minor to moderate Flood Warnings are current for the Bellinger, Orara, and Patterson and Williams rivers. Dangerous surf conditions are expected throughout Saturday. This is an update of the warning issued at 4.50 am Saturday.

As of the 18th August IRI had the likelihood of a El Nino developing as higher than la Nina, but then they also had neutral conditions remaining as the strongest option.. iri.columbia.edu/climate/ENSO/currentinfo/QuickLook.htmlSince then the SOI has moved into a rapidly rising phase and the current 30 day SOI is +13 and rising.

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE COLD CONTINUES!!! Rare late winter snowfall in Southern Brazil Friday, September 5th 2008. This day will go in our climatic history of the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul as one of the coldest ever witnessed in September. It was an amazing day. Temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius during afternoon hours are quite rare even in the coldest months of calendar from June to August, but today temperature dropped to 2 degrees in several cities after midday with the lows occurring during the afternoon. What began in the morning as granular snow and sleet quickly became moderate to heavy snow in the afternoon. The city of Pinheiro Machado (450 meters) never could expect to be whitened, despite the snow forecast from MetSul Weather Center, the only public or private weather institution in Brazil to warn on the snow. icecap.us/images/uploads/RarelatewintersnowfallinBrazil.pdfMaybe they should say as our weather bureau said this year when we got snow in sydney - "its not snow its soft hail!" 'Snowfall' shocks Kenyan village Residents of a village in central Kenya were shocked to see a blanket of hail resembling snow covering their land. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7596134.stmNZ record snowdepth increases Mt Hutt snowdepth gets another 40cm (some claim over 60cm) snow depth now 3.2m www.nzski.com/mountain.jsp?site=mthutt

Coldest September day in 33 years for Sydney Jessica Trevena, Saturday September 6, 2008 - 17:38 EST
The city of Sydney struggled to just 13 degrees today, making it the coldest September day since 1975.
Some suburbs did not even reach 13, including Terry Hills, which remained below 12 degrees all day.
The cold comes only 2 weeks after the city recorded its coldest maximum in 12 years, when it reached just 12 degrees on August 22.
Cloud and driving rain were responsible for the cool temperatures: cloud wrapping around a low pressure system offshore covered the city for most of the day.
Elsewhere along the coast temperatures were closer to average, with the thickest cloud centred directly over the Sydney Metropolitan area.
Over 60 mm of rain was recorded to 9 am - a 7 month high. So far 19 mm has fallen since 9 am.

Cold needs to become a somewhat permanent feature of the global warming religion.
