Bitterly cold south westerly & cold rain - feels like midwinter, not spring in SE Melbourne. Month average so far for closest BOM weather station is daily Max 2C below Sept last year & about 1.5C below 1970-2000 average. Daily minimum is 1C below last year & 0.7C below long term average. Average will drop in the last three days as we have three days of bitterly cold weather forecast. I'd swear it is much colder than that where I am, though I'm over a hill to the South of the weather station & probably getting colder due to the Southerly. My spring seedlings are not thriving as the greenhouse is much colder due to the higher than normal cloud cover. My tomatoes will be late this year as not likely to be planted at usual time. This pdf shows the string of intense storms circling the Antarctic, bringing misery to New Zealand, Tasmania and southern parts of Australia & probably S Africa & S America www.bom.gov.au/difacs/IDX0532.pdf

"When both daytime and overnight temperatures were combined, Sydney's average temperature this month came in at just under 17 degrees. This made it the coldest September in five years, despite being one degree above the long-term norm. It was also the coldest September in terms of daytime temperatures in three years. During the month, the city had an average maximum temperature of 21 degrees, which is still warmer than the long-term norm of 20. It took until the 27th to warm up to 27 degrees, the longest in 17 years. There was a 23-day period that stayed colder than 25 degrees, the longest in September in 10 years. The nights were not particularly cold overall, averaging a minimum of 12.3 degrees, one above the long-term average. This made it the coldest in terms of overnight minimums in two years. There were only six nights that cooled below 10 degrees; typically there are 11. The cold was pronounced across southern and central NSW with several centres including Hay and Forbes having their coldest September in at least 15 years in terms of daytime temperatures." www.smh.com.au/environment/weather/sydney-shivers-through-coldest-september-in-five-years-20100930-15yjh.htmllets hope it doesn't start cooling....

Scoresby: (Outer SE suburban station (Agri-research area, and surrounds are low density housing and wooded hills to North & South) I am south of the hills to the south of this station, so a little more exposed to cold South Westerlies - generally my own records match that of this station:
September 2010 Mean Min/Max: 7.0/15.1 Last year September: 8.2/17.3 1971-2000 Sept average: 7.9/16.4 1951-1980 Sept Avg: 7.3/16.0 So well down on the long term mean, even the 1951-1980 mean.
My spring garden is off to a very slow start.

The big plus is that the expected Locust plague is going to be hit hard.
With the drought breaking rain last season, the Australian plague locust multiplied & large areas had eggs laid and these are jsut starting to hatch. The cold rain & snow over the hatch areas will slow down the plague & make it easier to control (hopefully)
So the snow may be a blessing, even a Godsend - though that term has gone out of most people's vocabulary.

Having a wild ride in Fiordland SW of the south island, my barometer looks like a helicopter blade over the last couple of weeks. Last week it went down to 975hpa as low as it goes, then the start of this week it was up to 1037hpa and now its down to 983hpa and still falling with a heavy rain warning of up to 150mm then snow on Monday in the lower south island. ROLL ON GLOBAL WARMING AND PLEASE BYPASS CLIMATE DISRUPTION BEFORE THE NEXT ICE AGE.

T Melbourne saw just over 20mm of rain overnight, tipping the city past 100mm for the month for the second time in a row. and just days away from December it is just 13C in Melbourne at 2:24 in the afternoon.
