I feel these guys deserve their own thread. Watch this on as big and as high def screen as you possibly can... youtu.be/N2Ro159R400Brief rundown for those not familiar... NLC are rare, summer, high altitude (mesosphere) night time clouds. Most viewed in 2 hours or so after sunset, before sunrise. Little (no??) Record of these clouds exist only becoming more common in the last 4/5 years. It is believed they are ice crystals formed on meteorite dust as a nucleus. As can be seen from the video, they appear to glow pale blue and form to the atmospheric disturbances as they exist at that altitude. This is perhaps their most fascinating attrubute. They allow us to visualise the fluid dynamics of a medium that is otherwise invisible. The beauty of this is, in my opinion, the comparisons that can me made with more famiar examples of fluid dynamics...eg, the bed of a shallow stream over sand, wave pattern on a pool, smoke rising from snuffed candle. There is almost a fractal nature when you observe the phenomena at your feet, and plastered at the limits of our atmosphere. In a time when we struggle to completely understand the atmospheric dynamics around us now, and we often rely on computerised representations of jetstreams and vortexs. NLC are right there giving us direct and tangible information literally in way never seen before. I have never seen these personally despite attempting to over the years. I should just stay up but im a bit limited with family life and work commitments. However if you have the chance, take a minute, im sure its worth it!

Reminded me very much of flow in a river, where the wave form remains in place as the fluid passes through. First impressions took me back to my times on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. Wonder what accounts for that standing wave structure in the upper atmosphere.

The standing wave is stationary due to water flow, is this a similar situation.

Resistance as lighter density fluid flows over higher density??

Increasing Noctilucent clouds has to be due to the fact that the Mesosphere is cooling as they can't form at all unless the temp falls below a minimum of of at least -120*C during the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere, which is the opposite of how you would think the temps would be. Due to numerous rocket launches since the start of the space race we have been adding large quantities of water to the upper part the atmosphere as they pass through it. Water being the result of when rocket fuel is combusted, which eventually migrates to the poles. NlLCs are always more previlent during periods of solar activity also. The primary condensation nuclei for NLC's is meteoric dust and with the suns weakening fields due to the possible grand solar minimum and Earths field weakening in concert and undergoing and excursion is letting more debris in to burn up in earths upper atmosphere. The could also be a cosmic raay connection. The fact is that despite this NLC are still very little understood.
Just to add some information provided by a helpful fellow on another forum....

Just to add some information provided by a helpful fellow on another forum.... Kind of like the rest of climate science. Went to a bar in Paris and got into a conversation with a young American biologist and a Turk. The Turkish guy didn't seem to like Mr Erdogan, but made no slanderous remarks on Mr Trump. The young American (late 20s?) was astounded that I supported Mr Trump and absolutely flabbergasted when I challenged AGW theory. Said I sounded like his father. The Turkish guy (maybe 40s?) didn't seem surprised or perplexed by my statements. I DID NOT suggest to the young American that perhaps he should listen to his father. I did suggest that he should read up on 'natural' (including solar) climate forcings and cycles before rendering a 'final' judgement.

I didn't think you would be Blu 😉 Tbh I was in a park watching my youngest scooting, I responded to the title first, but content as an edit. I know I know....sloppy!!
