So Cutty - how would Ed Davey survive a severe winter and power cuts? Seems he's an awful long way out on the plank. There's no turning back for Ed, he'd see a harsh Winter as confirmation of Arctic amplification / CO2 induced weather weirding and push for greater "green" taxes and a greater reliance on renewables; I would hope that the majority of the chilly electorate would not be in agreement.

I wonder if SamCam will be knitting Dave a hoody for Xmas. If the winter is as hard as some are saying and the death rates of people in energy poverty due to the cold are the same 4000-5000 a month through till March, possibly exacerbated by power cuts, then Ed Davey, Cameron and Clegg will be in an extremely difficult position. Currently, they are trying to point the blame at the energy companies, and that together with Milliband's insistence on price freezes has resulted in a stop on any investment in UK energy. This can only get worse.

there trying to suck us dry .. because of all the green shit they have built ... it's starting to work against them .. 10% rise in costs from british gas are they not making enough money ...there should be a limit to what investment gets back ..not are fault they made mistakes .. why should we pay for there stupidity

They cannot be expected to finance the various Yeo, Gummer and Cameron pay offs - so the trough filling duty is passed onto the customers. If the politicians start making noises that the energy companies have to fund the green taxes and subsidies, then expect investors to stop investing in those companies, the companies will not be able to fund new base load power generation - and power cuts come earlier and last for longer and more people enter energy poverty and die from cold (not that deaths seem to concern the politicians). It is interesting that Obama and the EPA are attempting precisely the same trick in the USA.

The only good thing about President Obama is that he has approx two more years left in his term.
The Affordable Care Act is his undoing, and he doesn't even know it yet.
This will put Republicans back in power, which is not saying much of an improvement either.

Meteorologist: Gulf Stream weakens to lowest level in five years…may bode ill for Europe’s winter! German meteorologist Dominik Jung has a commentary today at his wetternet.de site where he looks at the Atlantic Gulf Stream. The commentary is titled: “Is the Gulf Stream Now Losing Its Steam?” The left hand chart is from 14 October 2012 and the right one a year later from 14 October 2013. "One year ago off the coast of North America there was a strong continuous current which one could describe as quite healthy. From Florida and along the entire coast of North America the current speed was more or less uniformly high. But compared to 2012 this year’s Gulf Stream shows a considerably disrupted flow. Already at the coast of North America the speed breaks down considerably compared to last year (see red arrow). At some places the speed is down to one half.” So could this have an impact on Europe’s coming winter? Jung thinks this is a real possibility. He continues: For now it is not clear what exactly the origin of the flow speed anomaly is. Of course the Gulf Stream remains intact and is not interrupted – an interruption would undoubtedly be fatal for our climate [in Europe]. In any case the flow has reduced considerably and thus the transport of heat to Europe has been considerably throttled, and that right before the coming start of winter. Never over the last 5 years has the Gulf Stream along North America been so weak as it is at this time of the year. That could be another sign for an unusually colder than normal winter.” Link: notrickszone.com/2013/10/23/meteorologist-gulf-stream-weakens-to-lowest-level-in-five-years-may-bode-ill-for-europes-winter/

The Voice of Russia reports: "Nearly half of Scottish people are afraid of being clobbered by an “extreme weather” emergency this winter season and some even feel it is a bigger worry than terrorism" Nearly half of Scottish people are afraid of being clobbered by an “extreme weather” emergency this winter season and some even feel it is a bigger worry than terrorism, according to research. Concern has been mounting over power and water cuts, and Scots are in fear of being stuck in vehicles or trains in blizzard-like conditions. The numbers from the research came out yesterday as the Scottish Government has started its campaign on winter readiness. Extreme weather emergencies are of grand concern for 49 percent of Scots. Last year it was just 38 percent according to a poll done by TNS BMRB, made for the Red Cross and the Scottish Government. Power, fuel, and water shortages are still areas of popular concern with 46 percent of citizens showing anxiety over these resources. Though, terrorism worries just 31 percent of participants. Major transport accidents are also just at a 27 percent level of concern. Still, there is a rise in public readiness for extreme weather, 44 percent this year as opposed to 39 percent in 2012. “Severe weather can strike quickly and at any time of year. In March, we saw the impact of severe snowstorms on communities in Arran, Kintyre and Dumfries and Galloway,” Transport minister Keith Brown said and added, “So whether it is making your home energy efficient, protecting your pipes, packing an emergency kit for the car or looking out for vulnerable neighbors, we can all play our part in helping Scotland get ready for winter.” Eleven percent of people feel very or somewhat prepared for terrorism and 13 percent feel ready to deal with transport accidents. It has been estimated that 28 percent experienced some delay in their gas, water, or electricity in the past year. In rural areas the percentage was much higher, at 41 percent. “Effective planning plays a huge part in everyone getting safely to their destination and, in support of the Ready for Winter campaign, Police Scotland will be working with road safety groups and organizations to offer free advice,” Inspector David Carballo, trunk road policing group, Police Scotland, said. Another Gulf Stream story; Tim Channon posting at the "TallBloke's Talkshop" reports: "Europe might be in for another very cold winter" Dr Michele Casati blogs "The Gulf Stream today - Less boost and more chaotic" "The Gulf stream could be a causative effect in relation to the cooling of the climate in some areas of the globe? Some opinion says [the Gulf stream] is shutting down, but, reading recently about some curious Giuliacci Weather, [the writer] claimed that the Gulf stream not only is slowing down but seems to work with greater intensity to give us more warmth …Betty “
That argument has already been investigated and analyzed several times in past years on this platform. What better time to repeat this argument, reporting on the current situation.
Within this new analysis you will also find several links to web pages that refer to articles written in the past season. Theoretical articles, which describe the characteristics and impacts on European climate or vice versa, analysis, monitors in the past years.
Works such as:
The current system and the thermohaline circulation (1) daltonsminima.altervista.org/?p=10070 An update on the Gulf stream daltonsminima.altervista.org/?p=6609 (link to translators)
In short, I believe that monitoring one of the most important currents of our planet must continue, considering the solar events and climate of our planet that seem to point towards a strong and radical change."
2005:
2012:
"Analysis, which clearly confirm that the Gulf stream has weakened and its path toward Europe is more CHAOTIC and FRAGMENTED. In fact as other editor of Nia had already reported in some articles, see -2010 2009 biennium, within a few weeks it even registered a change in direction. Specifically, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, in some periods it was reported a change in direction.
The current seemed to deviate towards the coasts of Greenland, rather than continue to Europe. This anomaly confirms the discovery of prof. Fiammetta Straneo."

Interesting to confront current NH Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly Chart with following part from the link provided by Cutty and written back 26th of march 2012: “… Researchers, led by Fiammetta have discovered that changes in ocean currents of the North Atlantic subtropical water wear, very hot, always more farther north. Hot water with about four degrees Celsius was found during their research. This hot water combined with its rapid spread, allowed the dissolution of Greenland glaciers masses … “ “This is the first time we’ve seen waters this warm in any of the fjords in Greenland,” says Straneo. “The subtropical waters are flowing through the fjord very quickly, so they can transport heat and drive melting at the end of the glacier.”
