mainstreamlastfirst.com/?slide=homeThese guys seem to have underestimated what it will be like to row in ocean waters while navigating thru ice. However they are now past the point where they will encounter significant ice for at least another month They now have a chance of making it to Cambridge Bay. From there, around about the middle of September, they can then consider the risks involved in setting off for Gjoa Haven. Quite possibly they can make it to Gjoa.

If you go to mainstreamlastfirst.com/?slide=home and then zoom out you can see that the entire 'voyage' is a total waste of their energy. I expect that they will come back and claim all sorts of things about open water, rotten ice and such like but they are hardly Amundsen. If they were attempting to demonstrate the NW passage then they have already failed. I only hope that SAR crews are not hazarded in rescuing them.

NW Passage surface sea temperatures looking very cold:

I agree that this trip was an exercise in folly whether "successful" or not. If the intent were to row the NW Passage "because it is there" I wouldn't mind so much. But the whole 'we're doing this to save the planet' thing really bugs me.
I don't wish them ill, but I'm not going to cry if they fail either.
Temps are falling along with daylight. Earlier, a small iceberg ate their anchor. I believe they procured a makeshift anchor a couple weeks ago but they continue to hug the coastline for safety's sake, which has GOT to be adding many more miles to their journey to their ultimate destination at Pond Inlet.
Plus, for the moment, they're about as far south as they can get up there. Eventually they will have to turn to the North...

These guys might make it!
The vessel is, I think less than the optimum, but they are making up a lot of time lately. Gjoa Haven seems like a given, plus a shot at Pond Inlet. Last year they would have probably made it. The question this year is if ice blocks their path earlier than last year.
About the only thing you can criticize that clearly makes it not a mainstream "last" first is that a NW passage is supposed to be an Atlantic to Pacific voyage or vice versa. This falls well short so its certainly not a "last". Its like all such endeavors but a beginning.
I have respect for these guys. I disagree that they are really doing it for a cause. They are doing it because they are extremists that see an opportunity for personal advancement. They proved that to me when they gobbled down the whale meat. These guys are not tools, they are in it for themselves to prove themselves and be successful.
I was a proponent of the Vietnam war at one point. But when I realized that Ho Chi Minh was about the equivalent of George Washington I was able to see through the politics. These guys have a cause and its the right cause. Its about what they can do, not about the world. Ho Chi Minh took aid from the Soviets, but that was because the Soviets were willing to support what Ho Chi Minh wanted.
I hope these guys make their objective. They are gutsy. And in the modern world gutsy isn't a common enough attribute.

its a bunch of people that have to much time on their hands and hanker after a world long past.
are they poor are they from poor background I don't think so, they are part of the ruling class that want their competition shut down, the currently poor aspirants.
let the ice eat them and then will see their capability relative real people like Hillary and Scott.

It is true in today's world the only ones who rise to the level of the great explorers are the astronauts. In today's arctic you can chat on the phone with your potential rescuers and your rescuers are further up the hill than you are.

Comparing what they are doing to 'sailing the NW Passage' is like walking in Tibet and claiming that you have now climbed Everest.

"In today's arctic you can chat on the phone" Which carrier would you recommend? Iridium has complete coverage. Others are available in the NW passage, Globestar, maybe Inmarsat but I don't have specific info on them. None of them have any affordable unlimited minute plans so you can leave your iphone home.

Icefisher, I think you will need to prove what you said and show us exactly how to chat in the net in the deep Arctic and by which gear.
