re: paleo terrestrial scientific analysis:
Am I reading the graphs correctly? It would appear that global temperatures are the lowest since the Cyrogenian period (snowball earth) which ended at say 530m. Is Leakey correct: we are in the 6th and final great extinction?

The Cryoshpere Today website has not been updated since 11th Oct 2009. A message reading "We are recovering from a server disk failure and hope to be updating images and timeseries graphs in the near future. Thanks for your patience." is displayed on the website. I find it hard to believe that it takes over 2 weeks to recover from a disk failure unless their administrative processes are hopelessly inadequate. I am starting to think that the reason this site is down is so that no one has a clear picture of what the ice is doing prior to the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Conference, with only a few more weeks to go. Is there an alternative site that displays this sort of information? arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/

Totally unexpected reply from you socold. As you totally believe in computer models you must have some experience of computer failures. When was the last time you had to wait more than a day for a system to be fixed. I work in the computer industry and can guarantee that if we left a customer down for the length of time they have been down we would lose the account.

It's just a website with some data which some people casually look at it in their free time. I can imagine if it goes wrong it's a low priority to get it back up again.

Socold is probably right on this. The US climate bill is apparently dead for this year..... Copenhagen is predicted to result in deadlock with enough nations not ready to take big economic impacts for environmental reasons. And alarmist declarations of 2nd warmest, 3rd least ice is getting really old. 2nd place means you lost.

The most recent trial balloon from the White House is that Obama will drop Cap n Trade, for the time being at least. He'll need all his political capital to get the other farse of a bill (healthcare) passed. If Cophenhagen falls apart - as it appears it will - and the U.S. passes no legislation, chances are that an economic crisis coupled with a change in political winds will result in an emphasis on domestic development of energy resources. Like it or not, the only way the U.S. will find its way out of the current financial mess is to become independent of foriegn oil and to generate jobs and price stabilization through development of its own natural resources (which are vast in terms of hydrocarbons). Those are the political and economic realities that trump climate theory. Nuclear nor renewable energy can play a significant role in energy independence (nuclear could be more impactful but its harder to get past the greenies) but it is domestic oil, coal and gas that will lead the U.S. back to global economic dominance which is what lets its citizens run their A/C's, drive their cars, and expand the economy.

You have hit the nail on the head with 100% precission. WE in the US are so fortunate to have abundant energy. That is the global equalizer, IF IT IS USED. We have a educated, dedicated workforce, are very inovative, and produce the best products in the world because of this. We just have to get going on it!

Finally......a site about sciencetific integrity.
PURPOSE OF BIOLOGY CABINET®
This site of the Biology Cabinet Organization® hasn't been devised with the intention of denigrating the genuine efforts of people to achieve a healthier world. We agree absolutely with the authentic actions that many people are taking to maintain our planet in optimum conditions, for the sake of all forms of life. Nevertheless, in addition to our educational work, we have the academic obligation and right to denounce the actions of groups and individuals who have usurped the name of science and are deceiving the public by distorting scientific knowledge.
We have written a paper about environmentalism to assist those who are interested in better understanding what actions we, the present custodians of our planet, can take to attempt to solve our environmental problems. We must state that, we are concerned about the distorted interpretation of some scientific data and by the use of such distorted data to instil fear worldwide. We're worried because it is not uncommon to find people without scientific preparation occupying influential positions and expounding scientifically unsustainable propositions on thermodynamics, climate, biodiversity, evolution, photosynthesis, physiology, etc.
The objective of this site is to expose you to the wonders of the Science of Life, Biology, in a simple and interesting way. We hope that you will appreciate our goal. This site takes the name of BIOLOGY CABINET®, and we’ll try to be a true Biology Cabinet® - a site where you can find straight answers to your questions about the extensive mosaic of interrelated Life Sciences.
Sincerely,
Editorial Staff
