"Normal" is merely a statistical construct for looking at change. Like everything else related to climate "science", it is abused for self(cause)-serving purposes. Hence "noise" becomes reason for "awe". Thirty years as a definition of climate is arbitrary, whose ends are adjusted to serve the wished-for trend. Perhaps "normal" should become a time period within which "no trend" is observed. Thus variance within this period is incorporated in "normal". Of course, as you expand this period, the variance will also expand ... as shown in your graph. Disasters are wrapped up in noise ... so perhaps normal should be defined as a period of sufficient length that minimizes both trend and noise ... but at this point we may rapidly be running out of records to play with ... and then we have geography. So, what to do? So, here we are ... back at our starting point ... somewhat the worse for wear. Waiting for that climate repairman name of Al with his siren sing-song knack. "Son ... your normal's out of whack! And I am here to help you get it back." I don't think it's "normal" for a washed up politician with a complete lack of scientific credentials to garner world attention and enablement from the scientific community. But then again, who am I to question my "betters". He is the voice that 'the lost' were waiting to hear. And the con men swarmed in the shadows. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” (Dr Joseph Goebbels)

Nope. I'm toast. I would try another browser, are you using pop up blockers or ad blockers? I'm using an ad blocker but this would be the first problem connecting. Other pages just tell me to disable the ad blocker if I want to see their page.

First 10 days of September 3.3 F BELOW normal - same as August. No rain ... 1.3 inches BELOW normal for month - August was normal. We have had a stretch of above normal temps. Of course, I am closer to the Arctic so expect it to be warmer up here. Still wayyyy below average on rainfall, but we are promised an inch or two this weekend. Seems there have been broken promises in the recent past, but hoping this promise is more than a ring. The warmth causes me to be optimistic about soy yields. My two fields that missed the wrath of the White Combine look ok. Potentially 5-8 bushels less than average, but with virtually no rain for past 60 days not bad. Love those C-4 plants!!!! A testament to the blessing of higher CO2 levels pushing the plants to a higher low moisture response. Long live the CO2 God!!!! AGW folks have given the CO2 God infinite power!

Where did the cold come from? It is probably more accurate to say where did the heat go to? From the synoptic chart, the US has had large anticyclonic air-masses over it for a while with weak cold fronts dropping down one after the other as far as the Gulf of Mexico. Very much the same happened in 9/11/2001 and NASA scientists claimed that the temperature drop was due to no aircraft flying for the week following 9/11. I can remember a research meteorologist I was working with at the time giving them a hard time with words to the effect: "There is a huge dome of high pressure over the US, it is September what do you expect?"

Our winter does not want to end. More snow forecast in the nearby hills tonight, and further large accummulations in the mountains.[to add to the 2 metres already deposited].
I gather NZ has also been suffering heavy snow.
