And no matter how you wish our demise, we are going to be around for quit some time. I'm not wishing America's demise, but a change in its dangerous habits. Thank God for the Finnish economic locomotive that pulled the west out of World War II and created worldwide wealth for billions to enjoy, lol. I just finished reading "Great Finns in World History." It was a short read. My favorite was Huckleberry. ;D

Look, 0bama told everyone he would heal the earth and stop the seas from rising, blah, blah, blah.
His plan is absolutely brilliant!
1. Fill the Gulf with oil. 2. Set it on fire. 3. Evaporate enough water to lower sea level.
Why didn't Al Gore think of that?

Touko is simply demonstrating the psychiatric concept of transference rather well. Throttleup, Thanks for noticing. It is a bit odd, no? We, who keep pointing out that nothing dreadful is happening- because it is not- are full of hate and denial, while those who see CO2 boogeymen in every daily report on ice/weather/sea levels/ storm warnings/rain, drought/cool/warm/etc. are posing as the sophisticates. The miasma of the true believer is entertaining in a dark way, like watching a slow motion train wreck or ship sinking. Darkly entertaining and odd? Yes! On the plus side, if you accidentally drop your toast and it lands butter-side down, at least you can blame global warming! But it is tiring when, as you say, every little thing is due to the CO2 boogeyman. I mean, come on! It's the 21st Century! Isn't it? Just as tiring as 0bama's "Bush's Fault!" mantra... It's nice, it's easy, it's simple. But it's a cheat.

graywolf, What grief? But since ou bring up the interesting topic of reactions to news, your reaction of expanding glee to any information you can wring out of a news report regarding a connection between Arctic ice and CAGW is rather macabre. If I actually believed, as you do, that the world was facing a real catastrophe caused by CO2, and that Arctic ice was an indicator of that catastrophe, I would not chortle or prance around in happiness as you do if I received confirmation. You, Lovelock, Hansen, Gore and far too many seem to be hungering after a good ol' apocalypse, and cannot wait until them sinners get whats coming. hunter, I have to agree with your characterization. Far too many of the CAGW crowd are all-to-pleased with the prospect of global annihilation as the result of temperature creep. One could easily imagine that if there was a killer asteroid heading to earth they would scream it from the roof-tops but, oddly, would cackle "Yes! YES!!" as it drew closer. Just seems odd to me... but then again, you and I are normal! --- touko, your posts are interesting. "They are fundamentally as scared of the changes as anyone, but try to offload the fright from their minds onto any carrier that they could despise and disregard, as they are fundamentally not in terms with their own insecurity. You and me are in effect working brutally as their very own unpaid psychotherapists!" I appreciate your help (and Graywolf's too!) as I am (obviously!) mentally unbalanced. So unbalanced, that I DON'T fear the "changes" as you suggest. The earth, climate-wise and other-wise has always been full of change. We adapt, or we die. In fact (I hate to tell you this!), we're ALL gonna die anyway, even if the earth followed your preferred path to climate perfection. As a "psychotherapist," you need to listen better. We're not 'scared,' full of hate or 'insecure.' (We all appreciate your 'brutal' help, however!) I'm probably slow and not as smart as you. But if it's a hot day in June I don't scream "global warming!" And if it's a cold day in June, I don't scream "ice age!" We would benefit by doing more watching, more learning, more listening... and less blaming. Arctic ice extent doesn't scare me. The extent of abject stupidity related to it does. Nice couch. Should I make another appointment for next week?

Interesting post.
I do not have the climate/weather background as many here do. I appreciate everyone's contribution as I learn a great deal.
I do not adversely fear the planet's climate. We will adapt -- if we are allowed to.
My main problem with CAGW (beside the lack of hard evidence that it will result in 'Catastrophe'), is the political aspect of it.
Individual freedom and limited government is ideal, as our Founders knew. When unknown and unknowledgable people in a powerful government can act with impunity to affect others' freedoms due to a perceived threat that is manufactured at will to fit the government's whim we all are in grave danger.
And the danger isn't CAGW.
There is a legitimate scienctific endeavor to understand climate. The debates we see on SC24 are interesting and valuable and a great learning tool. Our Nation's Founders pushed "higher education" as a means to make free men and women fully engaged with the world as a means to make both better.
Unfortunately, there are individuals, parties and groups that see "climate change" NOT as an avenue to improve the human condition, but as a means to control the very humans they claim to care for.
THAT, more than anything, inspires me to fight CAGW, while at the same time trying to understand in a sensible, scientific context, how this world of ours actually works.
We KNOW how it works politically. I don't think we quite have a handle on how it works physically. But the journey is fun.
It just means that the fight is, however, on two fronts.

There will be more frequent flooding, especially from hurricanes. Saltwater intrusion will become more of a problem. Lots of land will be lost over a long period of time. Perhaps not a catastrophe, but certainly a slow-moving disaster. There are always disasters - most salt water intrusion has been through overuse of deep bore holes into deep aquifers that are now filling with briny water from the ocean. There is also flooding where marshes have been drained and canalized and barrier islands built from river silt have been washed away with no replacing silt - as in New Orleans - and storm surges instead of slowing on barrier islands now have a clear path to populations built on flood plains - yes THESE problems are of anthropogenic origin. But a climate warming out of a Little Ice Age that has yet to return to the Holocene average - that warming is not anthropogenic - cyclical changes in climate are perfectly normal. The Roman Optimum and the Medieval Warm Period happened before the industrial revolution. There is nothing exceptional about today's climate - except that it is cooler than the average for this interglacial. Well said! There are so many more useful, concrete things we could be doing NOW to help people and economies rather than destroying people's lives and livelihoods over the far-off 'catastrophe' of AGW. If the oceans rise over the next thousand years will there be mass death in New York? No. They'll move. We'll adapt to the environment like we always have. The scariest thing to me is the temptation of governments to use this 'crisis' to control, tax and destroy people's lives and liberty. Sure, maybe I'll die due to AGW (I should live so long!). But I'd rather live a free man in the interim.

I ain't afraid of no gold I ain't afraid of no gold
If you're told you've said things you never said Who can you call? Goldbusters! A silly man with a brain of lead Oh, who you gonna call? Goldbusters!
I ain't afraid of no gold I ain't afraid of no gold
Who you gonna call? Goldbusters! If you're all alone, pick up the phone And call Goldbusters!

goldbuster,
I must admit that your theory (even if inverted) is deep, compelling and has a certain... "attraction."
Do you mind if I ask about your educational or cultural background... where are you from? What kind of work do you do? Do you have any practical experience in astronomy, physics, climatology or related fields?
You certainly do have deep-seated convictions; I grant you that.
