Weather is so unusual UK atm. Monday I woke to a blizzard, 2" lay by the time I got to work, all gone and spring like by 12pm. Yesterday there was ice in puddles at 9:30, again, a warm feeling day. Obviously solar insolation on a clear day having big effect. Looking around trees still look pretty wintery, as in few to no leaves. Thus time last year they were very well advanced in foliage, fully even. Spring is very much late this year compared to last. Twould make a nice graphic if you quantified Spring from the CET. Next year Astro has stated that "Spring" will not happen. (or at least most of it) That should be easy enough to notice.

The Meteoceil 500 hPa 96 hr forecast seems unusual for April? Currently similar to the end of the month. And we all know that comparisons to the 1960s-early80s is likely occurring now for the same reasons as then.

You are 12.5 degrees of latitude north of us, and surrounded by a cooling North Atlantic. Here, trees are almost totally leafed out. Fruit trees just past or in full bloom. Do y'all have a date-of-leaf-out time series?

Big snowmaker moving through. This will melt quickly this time of year ... but I have 2" stacked up waiting to melt. Pretty unusual this time of year.

Meanwhile in Saudi

When I worked in Saudi, my Saudi lab mates would tell me that, in the end days, it was prophesized that their country would be green again. As it is written, so let it be done. Meanwhile, here in Middle Earth, spring has shown up with the last 3 days in the 70s and 80s. The Siberian wallflowers are a solid mass of gold and the Dames Rockets are beginning their lavender, clove-scented bloom. And my massive number of bees are praising the great, benevolent God that has made this feast possible. Meaning ME. I have never once been stung ... so I guess they like me. They've not called me a racist ... yet.

All this is a coincidence of course ... UK hit by frostiest April on record, farmers and growers reporting considerable damage watchers.news/2021/04/28/uk-hit-by-frostiest-april-on-record-farmers-and-growers-reporting-considerable-damage/As of Tuesday, April 27, England has seen frost for 12 days, Wales 11 days, and Scotland 16 days-- their frostiest April since record-keeping began in 1960. Northern Ireland has so far experienced 8 days of frost, not yet surpassing their record of 11 days set in April 1983. "We’ve been seeing a high frequency of frosts overnight throughout April thanks largely to persistent clear skies for most," said Mark McCarthy from the National Climate Information Center. "This will be reflected at the end of the month statistics, which are already showing above-average sunshine duration, as well as low minimum temperature readings overnight, with some parts of northern England and Scotland reporting minimum temperatures 3.5 °C (6.3 °F) lower than the average for April."

Only 2011 and.......2007 are comparable in recent history. 2007 was interesting, I was still pushbike couriering in London at the time. I don't remember it being cold. I do remember getting a tan in April, but then knowing London how I did, I would have taken breaks in sheltered parks rather then exposed ones if the air was chilly. Similarly, the sun now has the same strength as in August, and there has been ALOT of sun, its just the air is cold. Also interestingly similar, I remember taking wife and kid 1 to a fun fair I'm Clapham on may bank hol, saw clouds and thought that'd it had been a while! Then we had little summer after that, July saw a great deluge but intense rain and thunder seemed common for 4 or more years. We didn't really get a warm summer till August 2013, and I'm sure y'all know what the winters were like. This April appears very analogous to 2007, and well....saw clouds today....

remember the spring troposphere is thinner than the autumn troposphere so you tan faster in spring, clearly tanning is temperature independent other than the willingness to expose.

I used to do model power boating on Clapham Common 'round pond' -- actually meant a mix of hoping the 'catcher' would stop the boat a model MTB destroying itself on the concrete edge on the far side and standing at the edge wondering if the wind would blow the model close enough to reach
