Japan is trapped by its energy needs and catastrofic default of its nuke based energy system, plus the unprecedent cost of after-Fukushima scenario. Must get and burn coal and gas as cheap as possible. Little room to play with basics, such as energy and food... Lesson: Don't build nuclear reactors at the seashore just a few hundred miles from a major oceanic fault. If there are some existing, build seawalls, protect backup generators and provide secure access to onshore grids.

- Ed Lorenz has been arguably the most influential meteorologist in history, having laid the foundations of chaos theory. From his 2008 obituary:
- In discovering “deterministic chaos,” Dr. Lorenz established a principle that “profoundly influenced a wide range of basic sciences and brought about one of the most dramatic changes in mankind’s view of nature since Sir Isaac Newton,” said a committee that awarded him the 1991 Kyoto Prize for basic sciences.

DuWayne: What I find somewhat troubling currently is the UV band variation. I think you are on to something. I haven't got it worked out, and probably never will: Solar Cycles, Corona, Ultraviolet (variable with Solar Cycle), Arctic Ozone, perhaps Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW), Arctic Vortex, Circumpolar Winds, Jet Stream, Meridional vs Longitudinal flow ... By the way: Listing factors sequentially does not mean that they operate sequentially, much less that they are direct drivers. I think of them as influences. This circus has too many rings for a single ringmaster.

glenn: sheeeesh, the guy (Obama)is a blooming idiot!I disagree. It is dangerous to underestimate the opposition. He is a trained, clever demagogue. Many of the trainers were Marxist. He knows little about anything except the weak points of the Constitution and its precedents. His minders/appointees know how to manipulate him. His appointments included a communist/green advocate ('Van' Jones), fortunately withdrawn. His original "Climate Czar" was a former Commissioner of the Socialist International (Carol M. Browner). Conservatives play Chinese checkers; progressives play chess. "Fundamental Change" means an economically crippled and militarily weak country that funds a global bureaucracy with 0.7% of GDP (Agenda 21, Sec IV, 33.13).

"a European like system where the state, not the people, are the predominant force in society."
And these are failing, except (perhaps) Germany and the UK. Even in the UK, I encounter despondency among people who are trying to earn a better living.

"Obamacare was passed against the will of the People. Does the Constitution grant power to Congress and the president to do that?" I hate to tell you this but Obamacare passed both houses and survived a Supreme Court challenge. The same way bills have been passed for years so quit whining like a baby. Polls have never had anything to do with law making. And so was the Missouri Compromise. It was held Constitutional by the Supreme Court (Dred Scott decision). It ended badly, costing ~500,000 lives. Let us do better than that by repealing and replacing an expensive, debt-producing, Liberty-destroying and in some cases deadly (NPAB) law that Mr. Obama has already violated.

Thank you, Magellan! Fear-mongering is rampant in some circles. A dose of truth is good medicine. Clearly, only the Administration can create catastrophe. (Perhaps we are in trouble after all.)

I don't think you understand Mr. Obama's position. It is from the old "western" movies. The stagecoach robber points his weapons at driver and passengers and shouts: " Stand And Deliver". At the political level, the modern version is dictatorship. It is "conservative" to wish to preserve life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender. Proverbs 22:7 (NIV) I understand Mr. Obama's position perfectly well. Negotiate with anything else but our full faith and credit. In addition it is just a stupid move by the Republican's because everyone knows it is and idle threat with nothing behind it. From your reference to "full faith and credit", perhaps you misunderstand the situation. There is ample available revenue to pay interest of ongoing obligations and principle of obligations falling due. It is a matter of prioritization. Would you not prioritize your rent/mortgage or car payment/public transit ticket above a vacation in Hawaii (or wherever)? The howling comes from those who are intent on buying votes and gathering political donations (e.g., Solyndra, LightSquared, A123 et al.) The conservative position is that the gravy boat is empty. One can not run the United States like Chicago.

How any self proclaimed "conservative" could threaten the voluntary first ever "default" of the United States of America is beyond me. It certainly is not what I would call fiscal conservatism. The vindictive mean spirited look of government. Imagine if they decide to mess with you and your health care! "Feds Try to Close the OCEAN Because of Shutdown" "The Park Service will also have rangers on duty to police the ban. Of access to an ocean. The government will probably use more personnel and spend more resources to attempt to close the ocean, than it would in its normal course of business. If they learn how to close the ocean, all the better. They can then use the experience to close the southern border, for which they have responsibility.
