"Both houses of Congress", "Constitutional muster" "Missouri Compromise" Dred Scott v. Sanford; "The Dred Scott decision was overturned by the 13th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution." www.loc.gov/rr/program/bib/ourdocs/DredScott.htmlBad law and bad decisions can be overturned. This one was settled by rebellion, war and Amendments. Not a good method, but an appropriate thread on which to discuss America failing. By the way: both laws involve slavery. I think repealing Obamacare without going to war would be a much more practical and realistic approach but with the Tea Party nutjobs you never know... As I wrote, rebellion and war is not a good method (actually, a bad method). So, thus far I agree. As to "Tea Party nutjobs". I think if you investigate beyond the derision of "progressive" politicians and our media, you may find most are attracted by the concept of " Liberty". Although I, too, find that concept attractive (even essential), I am not a member of the Tea Party. You might read up on the history of our "Missouri Compromise" (a law), the Dred Scott decision (Supreme Court), and the Civil War leading to the 13th and 14th Amendments. As I said, "rebellion and war is not a good method"; governance on Constitutional principles is.

"If I wanted America to fail" ...a law legally passed by both houses of Congress and has withstood Constitutional muster. It is variable in UV: Lean, Dr. Judith. “Solar Spectrum, Variability, and Atmospheric Absorption.” Scientific. NASA - Science@NASA, April 6, 2011. science.nasa.gov/headlines/images/sunbathing/sunspectrum.htmNote definition as integral over entire spectrum. Note concession that extreme UV and x-ray variation > 1%. If these are absorbed by atmosphere, what happens to their energy? "At wavelengths shorter than about 300 nm, there is a relatively large variation in the Sun's extreme UV and x-ray output (greater than 1%), but the Earth's atmosphere is nearly opaque at those wavelengths. For Earth-dwelling beach-goers there is no significant difference between Solar Max and solar minimum." Note step-wise spectral irradiance below 10^2 nm. Sparse data? More information in referenced PDF: Lean, Dr. Judith. “Variations in Solar Irradiance and Climate.” Powerpoint (PDF), January 16, 2012. st4a.stelab.nagoya-u.ac.jp/nagoya_workshop_2/pdf/1-1_Lean.pdf

He did not have Obama's skill at acquiring donations and building a financial political war chest. But he did have great skill in finding new positions: Athens, Sparta, Persia. (The Peloponnesian War, - Thucydides)

Don't blame the EPA or Ms. Jackson. The word is that the fish rots from the head down.

(Not a statement of "piscine biology", of course.)

One of about 28,000 Google hits. Just in case you didn't see it with it's cartoon. Maxine. “Maxine and the Bird Feeder.” Opinion. 24hourcampfire, May 6, 2010. www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/4062597/MAXINE_AND_THE_BIRD_FEEDERIt begins: "I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it is, as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. "But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue. Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table, everywhere! ...." (More)

dontgetoutmuch, I am all about cutting waste and red tape wherever it can be found. But the fact remains the vast majority of our budget goes to the military and entitlements. Without cuts to both we will never correct our fiscal problems. We should still have more than a strong enough military to defend ourselves and our interests. Glennkoks, I think you will find that Social Security is considered a paid-for obligation of the United States. Google "Social Security" and "obligation" for details of the scheme. Excess funds in the Social Security Trust Fund are swept to Treasury and replaced by interest-bearing Treasury Bonds, an obligation. The clever ploy of calling them "entitlements" is to lump them with social entitlements, such as welfare.
